Hi Syncro, Andrew & anyone else who might know (hopefully the owner of the above bus),

The is the colour I want to paint my '74 bus - I love it!!

I thought it was 'Oceanic Blue' which I was told was only available in one year (1978?). Looking at Syncro's list, it's listed as Oceanic Blue 57H J4.

But looking at the colour charts Andrew posted (great work, mate), Oceanic Blue is not listed anywhere. Looking closely, it seems the above colour may be 1976 chart 'Reef Blue' L-57H 2883 OR 1977 chart 'Reef Blue J4' L-57H 2883!!

Are you confused yet?? The logical answer is of course, that VW called the same colours different names in different countries, just like they have different model names in different countries.

Looking at the paint codes is a bit of a clue - Syncro's Oceanic Blue 57H J4 and Andrew's 1977 chart Reef Blue J4 L-57H.

But I need to be sure!! I don't want to give my painter the wrong paint code and he starts spraying and "Oh Shite, it's the wrong shade!!!!"

If you know or have sprayed your bus 'Oceanic Blue/Reef Blue J4' or own the above bus - please divulge....

    Thanks, Markus

    Default Thanks everybody

My colour is definitely Avocado Green!

My I suggest a title name change to this sticky to VW Paint Colours 1970 to 1979?

As if it had said that I would have looked at it before asking my question as I thought it was only 1977 to 1979 by the title.

    Great thread!

Markus, your painter should be able to mix up a sample pot for you to test.

    OK, thanks Garth.

Is there no KC member out there with a bus painted Oceanic or Reef Blue? Be interested to hear your respray experience...

    Hi Markus,

Did you ask Steve Muller (Kombi Rescue). That bus is one of two in Oceanic Blue at his workshop that I drool over whenever I visit and I remember talking to you about it whilst there a few weeks back - it is the colour I wanted to paint my Janie (did you end up with her?). Steve told me it was only on 1976 Deluxe models but I guess it is possible that VW use different names for the same paint code. I reckon Steve would know who did the paint job (it might have been Peter) and the painter could probably confirm the code.

    Hi Baz,

Yeah, that's where I took the photo of this bus. No, I haven't spoken to Steve about this colour or who painted it since that day we met. I will ask him again when I see him.

Yes, I have bought your 'Janie' but haven't been able to pick her up because Steve was away for a few weeks and she needed a few things doing to her. Hopefully, picking her up on Monday.

Well Janie will be getting painted this colour and it's kinda cool that you wanted her this colour, too That's why I wanted to be sure of the paint code, my brother is a spray painter and hopefully he'll be doing the job for 'family' rates!

    How's the fishing been?

    Hello,

Can someone help me please, read through all the codes etc but I can't figure it out from my VIN plate.

The current colour of my bus is a mix of a reddish orange and inside looks like PMG red? The plate says it is a delivery van so may have been repainted but can't figure out the original colour. My plate says 214 2 ... ...

    Any help would be appreciated.

That colour combo is my absolute favourite for a late Bay...such a horny colour!!!

Before anyone says... I know the paint code thing is not necessarily universal, but this is an awesome site with SAMPLE PICTURES down the bottom!!!

I guess my bus is marino yellow (beetle colour by the chart, but whatever ). Came up as CAT Yellow when I had it at the panelbeaters last year.

My Australian delivered January 1978 Kombi is Chrome Yellow -L20A.

It does appear to have always been painted that color so the statement that claims no Australian delivered kombis were painted Chrome Yellow may be incorrect.

Hey Mark, Yes Mine has a plate behind the passenger seat that states it is a Sopru 4 seater conversion.

Still scratching my head though as the outside is painted with L20A but the inside I am still not certain.
So it does seem that someone has repainted the exterior at some time. This could mean that the statement "No Australian Delivered Kombis in 1977-.... were painted "Chrome Yellow" is in fact true.

Dammed if I can find an "M Plate" up under the dash near any air vent or anywhere else.

I just got Auto Barn Virginia to mix up a can of Marino Yellow - E6 and it is "Yellower" than the interior colour.

Guess I will have to go see the "spectrometer" ? Boys ?

L20A on Left - E6 Middle - L20B on right - None of them seem to match the original unchanged existing interior colour......
