Default What Engines Can I Use?

I have a 1974 Kombi and have an original motor that came with it. There is a serious crack along the engine block which causes it to leak oil. I have decided to sell the motor for what ever I can get for it and go with a new or used motor. I have heard about Volkswagen selling 1.6 and 2 L engines for the Kombi and have also heard about people using 3 L Porsche motors. What motors can I use without making serious modifications to the engine bay or transmission?
    Thanks.

Unless you want to spend $$ modifying the engine bay, forget the Porsche power plant.....best option, imo, is to replace it with the same that came out. That way everything will match up - gearbox, starter etc. - assuming of course that it had a stock donk in it in the first place....cheers, Mark

Also what would be the best and cheapest way of obtaining the engine that I need? Online, local mechanic etc.?

Easy replacement is type 4 either 1800 or 2000. Will fit the hole in the back of the Kombi but 2000 will need some work to fit the 1800 gearbox.

....mmm best & cheapest aren't usually used in the same sentence !! Check out CBB VW :

Can highly recommend both products & service. Mike is a true VW craftsman that knows his stuff.
Just depends on how far your budget can extend as to how much you get done.
Me, I'd keep it stock, keep it simple & keep it in the best possible condition.
    Cheers, Mark
