We always wave when we see a kombi! The kids are all trained well too, as soon as anyone spots a kombi we call out KOMBI - get ready guys and wave like mad! We get the odd one that doesn't wave back tho (probably think we are on a day trip from the looney bin!), but hey that doesn't bother us, we look for the next one!

i know im guilty of not spotting another kombi until too late and may have missed or not returned a wave, and have received the same...waved but noticed the driver looking straight ahead, so perhaps not seen by them.
but in general, the waves are usually responded to. it's a nice feeling.

I am usually getting a 3 out of 4 wave ratio, but last night I got something else. Driving with the window down and my daughter in the passenger seat we were verbally abused 4 times in a 12km round trip to KFC in Rosny. I hadn't driven badly, cut corners, tailgated or anything and yet 4 tossers (female included) yelled abuse out of their windows loud enough for my daughter to hear. She was a little confused as to why people were doing that to her father who wasn't doing anything unusual or usually not reacting in some manner. Must have been something going on last night.

My first car over 20 years ago was a '68 beetle, so I was introduced to what I prefer to call the "air cooled" wave. Not to mention as little kids we were encouraged to wave to every VW we passed in our boring family car. I love the wave and also feel pangs of disappointment when one isn't returned. Worse than this though is realising you have missed a wave. A couple of times I've only just caught a kombi passing with folks looking back with forlorn faces and their waving hands wilting. It tears me up inside remembering I've missed such open exchanges of happiness!
It is sad that some owners just don't get it but then again if we all did then there wouldn't be any kombis going up for sale for newbies to come into the clan.
As sporadic KC's we send a big wave out to all.

Same here...i'm sure ive missed a wave or two over the years.
It gets pretty busy out there at times and i find there are lots of distractions by other cars and road users and lets not forget the backseat drivers.I have waved at a few Kombis and the driver has missed it due to focusing on the job at hand.Which is fully understandable but feels a little awkward at the time...
But i find my Kombi Radar works incredibly well and i spot Kombis on the other side of a two or four lane carriageway and even catch glimpses of Kombis between bushes, trees etc.

We've been practicing our Kombi Wave for ages now... there are a couple of Kombis in the smallish town where we live... Unfortunately I haven't had the wave back yet...might have something to do with us being in a Kia Carnival???!!!
Don't worry, Muriel will show her face soon...
...she's still visiting Boris at Volkscare though...!!

Well yesterday I decided to take the '63 SC for a run as something different. It still turns a few heads I will admit. As for waves I did get three. One from a Honda people carrier, one from a Nissan Patrol and the other from a Kombi T5. I returned all though I was a bit surprised by the first two. They made it very obvious. The Patrol even flashed the lights to make sure I knew.

Maybe they were closet VW owners

I headed up to Mooloolaba towrds the end of last year and passed anumber of Kombi's who didnt wave

Get lots of kids on the side of the road or in other cars given the peace man. Its pretty cool.

When I moved from a T2 to a T4 a few years ago NO T4 drivers waved. Im back in the T2 now but have noticed more T4 drives getting into swing of things.

Default Friendly Kombi Owners

1st outing with the kids, my 14 yr son didnt want to be seen dead in our newly purchased 68 bay camper, he said what would people think if they see us in this old car!!, they may think we are poor that its the only car we have!!!.. no respect, tried to tell him but teenagers wont listen to their parents. Anyway we pull up at the local shopping centre and a young girl approached us, she was another Kombi owner, came over all excited to welcome the new kombi into the neighbourhood. better than a wave and an eye opener for our son. priceless.

My 12 year old daughter after having loved the Kombi all her life so far has recently decided that Kombis are NOT so cool.

"Whats this with other random people waveing at us its SOOOOO embarasing you are NEVER taking me to school in this thing!"

Its realy sad as she has gone from loving itwhen "random" people wave and madly waving back to slouching down in the seat and covering her face.

I remember back in the day walking down the street 4 steps in front of my mum, heaven forbid that anyone from school would see me as a mommys girl. poor mum. the things we put up with as parents.
Keep the waving up she'll get over it.
Happy cruisin

Just reading the original, printed in 1976, Volkswagon Campmobile Instruction Booklet that came with The Van we picked up a week ago. Page 23 has a paragraph or two that says,
"These days, wherever you drive you are almost sure to see other 'Campmobiles' on the move. These families are very likely to share common interests with you. When on the road give them a wave; or if you share the same campsite say a friendly "hello". .....

So there you have it!! It's in the instruction booklet; it's official - We Should Be Waving!!!

I'm always driving past T3 owners who don't wave.It hasn't stopped me waving at them but it does get a little disheartening at times.

I've missed plenty of waves, im either day dreaming or, in today's case, looking at a tree..yes a tree..off in the distance and completely missed the wave
I always feel bad when i miss a wave cause i get annoyed when someone doesn't wave at me..
ah well you can only try and try i do!
Peace
