A little off topic, but I'm really surprised how far this thread has actually gone. I just wanted to know if anyone knew anything about replacing the engine in kombi's and then the thread just took off.
I was surprised when it reached 20, but 63.

103mmish pistons and barrells?? chev pistons? what comp are you running?? This to me is interesting

My current build is 105mm pistons and barrells with 5.4" H beam rods and a 78mm stroker which gives me just over 2700cc. Heads are similiar to yours with Porsche plug location and Manley stainless valves with 46mm inlet and 38mm exhaust from memory. Been a while since I looked at them lol. Haven't decided on cam etc yet.

Hmmm the engine was built by the bloke I bought the kombi off, but it wasn't installed.
It was half installed by VW Performance on the Central Coast, NSW till it ran...
It was tweaked and finished by OZ VW Performance in Croydon Vic...
Exhaust by Tangerine Racing in the USA, worth mentioning as it is tuned and brings out the best sound and power from the engine..
Along the way I did bits myself, exhaust, heating pipes, electricals, gauges, sensors and so on...

Been a bit of a group effort and quite a journey...

LITLL, hey how ya going...? I'll have to research your questions...

Remote oil coolers, HPC coating, Good oil, Porsche cooling system/ DTM set up from Raby's are a few ways to start.

On the handling issue, a set of 15 or 16 inch rims with reduced profile to maintain tyre OD makes a lot of difference to the "bodyroll".
I had 15's on my bay past and now have 16's on my T3. The suspension is standard and the bus sits flat around corners.
Love the thread and I wished I had the room and money to have original and modified busses. I love the passion VW people have and this thread shows it big time.

Engine swaps, b'ah!
My stock 2L will go far enough over the speed limit on a flat rural road as to lose my license, and I took a photo to prove it too, just don't tell Emma.
On a 40-something degree day it travelled from Nowra to Campbelltown with a FULL load - 4 kids and all our stuff for a weeklong holiday. It sat on 90 km/h all the way, up and down hills, and when I pulled up and the ambient temperature was still over 40, the infra-red thermometer said the engine was sitting at 85 degrees C.
I drive it 60 km each way, each day, to and from work. It sits in the hot Bathurst sun all day, but by the time I've driven 1 km the cabin is cool enough because the engine isn't adding to the heat. I travel home in this heat, up 650 m in altitude in those 60 km and the hottest I've ever had it at the top of a big hill with a car full of kids and a fortnights groceries on a HOT day was 110C.
A properly built type 4 should cost $6k, a suby conversion at least $6k, but does that include everything? Has the gearbox been modified so that the subi doesn't rev so high and cook itself prematurely?
I was talking about my bay with the local mechanic, he was doing a 100 000 km service on a subi and I staggered at the cost, primarily based on the timing belt/chain. His other job in the workshop was another subi that had overheated. It sounded like an omen to me.
And what is with wanting more performance than all that anyway? The wind noise from the drip rails next to the windscreen is noticable at 90, loud at 100, and almost overpowering at 110. How loud do you want to travel?
End of rant.
