Iconic photo of Mark Richards and the late Michael Peterson about to paddle out for the final of the first ever man on man surf competition. Held at Burleigh Heads with about 10,000 spectators looking on from the hill. On the left hand side I spotted the tail of a Kombi. It has a delux strip but who is going to identify the year. All you got is a rear air vent to go on. Don't ask me the answer, but my guess is a 71 delux?

72/73 had that delux trim. later models moved halfway down the sides.

im saying 72 because of the colour scheme.

Epic photo, epic comp and two absolute legends. It seems fitting that a kombi is in the mix too. Well spotted

Aa memories, on the friday 2 days before this final took the day off school to spend the day at the Stubbies comp, dear old mum had given me some cash to put towards a board I was paying off. That evening went to a beach party at Surfers, got arrested underage drinking and drunk and disorderly, (guess where mums money went?). Was a bit of a legend at Miami high for a while after I threw up on a cop, waiting for the paddy wagon. Oh thegood old days..

I'd say a 73 as I throught the 72 had smaller air intakes

Feel a tangent coming on ha, but no definitely Brandovino, the three day hangover contributed to the fact that I have never touched another drop of it since.
(Have however made up for it with just about everyother licquor available including gooney.)
