Hi guys, I'm in the middle of doing up the pop top on my 74 Bay. I've just had a fibre glasser tart it up and patch the old glass sunroof hole which always leaked. He has cut off the bottom edges that sit in the gutters holding it in place. His thinking was that it will always hold water under the glass and rust. Has anybody ever mounted a pop top in this fashion? I'm a little nervous about how strong it's going to be. Plan is to bolt it firmly to box steel braces in roof and then Sika flex the whole surround at this stage...
@David H has done something similar to what your talking about ,best to chat with him how he has his pop top fixed after that modification .
@rstucke welded / fixed a box steel frame into the roof section and did away with the bottom section. Needs to roll some box section to the roof curve. No chance of rust in his.
Thanks Barry, Stoked to hear that there a few people who have already run with this method, I'll sleep better knowing I'm not the Guinea Pig on this one!. I'll try get onto @rstucke for more info.
@GS-PEARL Have a long on this thread does explain what rstucke did, http://forums.kombiclub.com/threads/hole-in-roof-whats-the-best-way-forward.56970/#post-629891
Wow, that is impressive! Very neat and practical. I have the full length fibre glass on mine with the rack/cargo section at the front. I find this extra storage up top very handy so will need to go a different way than you @rstucke. Thanks for the Pikkies. Are they new springs and lifting brackets? That's another thing on the list, decide whether to clean mine up or buy new.
I've got more pics of the finished job on a hard drive, which I'll post when I find them and yes new scissor lifts, solid not tubular from a caravan equipment supplier
B Best possible way to solve this problem....... If only Sopru had thought of it when they did the original conversions, thereād be a lot less rusty roofs around. Cheers, Mark
Took a couple of photos of the finished article at Bonny Hills last week You can see where I put stone guard film where the Rubber seal on the poptop sits on the tin roof so it doesn't wear into the paint been good for a few years now. The screws go through aluminium slats sewed into pockets in the bottom of the canvas
