Didn't your mechanic give you some sort of ball park $ figure?

    I would be asking.

    1. they can be re-bushed, but left as they are (a while longer) they won't stop your bus.
    2. $27.00 each from Roy
    3. don't know what the differences are. Someone else?

    5. $90.00 from Roy
    6. what's an idler pin?
    7. 15 to 20 minutes of mumbled swearing.
    8. I assume you mean the tinware. Probably oily, dirty, dinged and some bolts missing.

    Doesn't sound too bad.

Don't sweat it Dan. These are all good maintenance jobs that have been left too long. New steering box and other front end goodies and you won't know yourself. The foam and tin gotta be fixed, and won't be too pricey.

My ride has a 19xx engine turning a 1700 box on 14" wheels. Revs pretty hard but no major drama. Just stick on 90ks. 1600 couldn't tell ya but unless I'm mistaken most will tell you it's no major crisis.

Just put it down to a 'large tune up' in your cerebral Kombi hassle ledger. The ride will be much better for it.

    Yep,.. that's definitely a kombi... ;)
your mechanic sounds pretty thorough.... fix what you can yourself now and identify the things that are a concern for the long term, and leave what you can live with. Half the stuff he mentioned is probably fine for a while, ask him what he thiks needs immeadiate attention and what can wait.

    So true Ray.

At first glance it all seems too much, but if slowly tackled bit by bit, the problems will be rectified.

Can you bring it out to the Christmas in July on Sunday? I'm sure there will be a few of us who'd love to have a look and help you out.

    btw, who is the mechanic?

It is out at Wiseman's Ferry, probably too far to get back to work by 3.

It's hard to say if anything will do more damage - probably not but I am just some guy typing on a keyboard 300 km away.

That list is great. How fantastic that he has been so thorough for you. There's nothing on that list that I wouldn't do myself.
I'd suggest you go though the list with the mechanic. There are some parts that you need to buy, some things that need some WD40, others that need tightening with a spanner, others that can be ignored (I think all kombis were built with 'damage' to the bottom RH side of the sliding door - I'm sure it is in the original blue print, or at least a factory option).

And don't worry about the gearbox - it means you have slightly lower gearing than the 1800 box would have, but 4th is very close to being the same.
Start with the steering wheel. Pop out the black plastic in the middle, undo the large nut you see there and turn the steering wheel round 180 degrees. That should fix the indicators self cancelling. Then tighten the nut on the bottom of the passenger side mirror. Get a phillips head screw driver to remove the lenses to replace the globes that aren't working. That will be a good start and shouldn't take too long.
