Hi..just wondering what i am supposed to think when my mechanic says to me that bonnies engine has an agm head and not a volks head?...can anyone explain this in reasonably simplematic terms? The winner will be the member that can make me understand this and will get a free longbow lesson.

AMC is just a brand that makes new Volkswagen heads? I'm pretty sure anyway.

AMC is just a brand of aftermarket heads it is preferable to have matching heads so that each side of the engine is performing the same.
I don't know how differant they are to VW ones

Well the reason i ask is if one is original and one is aftermarket then why does the gasket kit have to be different in both cases?

I have a set of AMC heads. Just make sure you watch your vavle guides if you get them. Mine wore out very fast the first time, and I had to get them reconditioned.

Also some people put spacers on them aswell, Dont get them. The linkage bar for your carbs needs to be customized and also it takes down your compression.

i'm running amc heads on my type 4.. no durastic valve movements as such..

1500king, I wish i would have followed you advice when i did my top end rebuild.. after taking the manifolds off yesterday and looking closely at the ports.. they are far from smooth inside.. Didn't you make a thread with pictures of these modifications?

    cheers guys

I know its not what you want to hear but there is no way a decent mechanic would build an engine with 2 different heads, its unheard off.
As I mentioned and same as 1500king said the engine will run uneven, there is proberbly differant compression in each side, you cannot build a motor to last like this.

Now I might have the wrong end of the stick here, You are saying you have one of each?
If you mean both heads are aAMC disregard the above post.
If you have an AMC and a VW, take notice of the above post.

No dave..they are all AMC heads..i just wondered why they had to have AMC gaskets and not volks gaskets seeing as AMC is supposed to mimic volks.
