Paluma Road in Cannonvale just outside Airlie town (5mins drive if that) - there aren't any strictly legal but can camp down here - mate's looking around for some other areas for you :)

Lived in Mackay for 15 or so years, left about 6 years ago, if they havent subdivided it?... :( you could camp at the bottom of East point road which runs parallel with Mackay harbour beach...no ammenities, also there are a couple of spots at Shoal Point a Nthn beaches suburb of Mackay, nice little area with toilet block at end of main drag...another camp spot off left of main road Shoal Point has nice area with big paperbark trees and several bbq/fire places and is beach front when the tide is in :p. Bucasia is a nice area just down the road from Shoal Point and did have a nice little caravan park but i dont know whether it is still going, make sure you check out Eungella which is out and up in the hills west of Mackay...very nice with clean creeks to swim in and rain forest walks, a hang gliding ramp 50 foot from pub door... so dont hit the turps too hard lol
Cape Hillsborough Nth of Mackay has/ had a free camp area and caravan park, this is a great spot with a beautiful beach and roos laying on the beach sand some time...what a life! has some good walking tracks and never seemed to be packed out except for peak times of course.
South of Mackay is Cape Palmerston which is 4wd in wet weather but we had the old beetle in there in good weather, be wary of soft sand though. Like most areas if you check out a few side tracks you will find a place to camp, Mackay lost a lot of its van/camp parks to development but is a nice area and take a fishing rod with you:)
