I am looking at an auto mid 70's bay tomorrow, with a failed gearbox. Is there a common problem with them that may be an easy fix? Can they be rebuilt ?

Biggest thing to worry about with a dead auto would be a dead ATF pump... no ATF pump means no hydraulic pressure, which means no actuation of valves and no fluid in torque converter, which means no gear selection or transmission of drive. Inoperative ATF pump also means no lubrication so hence damage to internals... it's for this reason that the driveshaft's are supposed to be disconnected when towing automatic vehicles.

Auto's an be rebuilt but like anything that requires a rebuild in the world of cars, it can be expensive. I'd say you won't get much change out of a grand... tho if it is done properly and then maintained well it will easily last annother 20 years
