    The Switch contacts work at the bottom of the lever setting, and if the alternator isn't producing enough voltage the relay shouldn't work. Yours may have been connected to something else, or your battery might be really well charged. Had all sorts of trouble checking it without the engine on a long time ago as the damn thing wouldn't go. Start the engine and run for a couple of mins and away it went. Could be to do with the relay itself too. It may be a non standard one that has been replaced in your case.

    I dont have one at all at the moment, the switch works and the relay has power...
