    Hey Guys,

We would just like to say thank you to all of the lovely Kombi owners out there that helped aid us in the determination of the engine size of Ethol. However, Ethol had her inspection in SA on Monday an the diagonsis wasn't quite the news we wanted to hear. From the description we were provided with to the one the mechanic told us on the phone, very different, she appeared to be a "death trap".

Ethol, had lots of problems, she was unroadworthy and was going to set us back 3000 dollars just to get her on the road.
    1. 5% brakes, the drums have gone because there were no brakes to use...
    2. right hand brake cable, there isn't one...
    3. barring for the front wheel needs replacing
    4. Steering, oops... it can't steer, the barrings have gone and the list goes on...
    5. Engine, there isn't place in the engine that is pissing/leaking oil...

SO WE ARE LOOKING FOR A POPTOP KOMBI TO DO UP BUT NOT HAVE DO DO UP, SOMETHING WE CAN BOTH ENJOY, MAINLY FOR TRAVEL BUT IF YOU SEE ANY ABOUT IN HOBART OR TAS CAN YOU PLEASE LET US KNOW...

Sad :( we were really looking forward to having Ethol! :(

TEXT MESSAGE WOULD BE COOL: 0438520143

    CHEERS,
    Prue and Barnsey

So does that mean that you aren't buying her? That's sad....

Unanticipated problems such as engine leaks are a normal part of owning a kombi, and sometimes may be remedied by something as simple as replacing a seal. Your kombi doesn't sound unusual in that respect - in fact, she sounds very similar to mine! I would be seeking a second opinion before giving up.

Anyway, keep your eye on these forums - you don't have to own a kombi to participate, and often good buses are listed here first.

I agree with Woz as opinions vary on vehicles-especially VWs.
Was the guy a VW mechanic?

Perhaps some Tassie KC members would be able to advise and all help find another if Ethol wasn't suitable.
Perhaps you had better go to Salamanca tomorrow

    Hey Brookie,

He was specialist in VWs. Yeah, he was pretty sure Ethol was not getting on the road anytime soon... no brakes, no steering, dead trap... just a risk we didnt want to take and it was going to cost us well over 1000 bucks to get her to Tas. Then get her fixed here... Just looking for one with not so many problems...

    Cheers,
    B

Aww sad news about Ethol...shame she was being offered with so many faults that you weren't made aware of.
I hope you find something down your neck of the woods that you can check out beforehand. They seem to be popping up all over Tassie at the moment, good luck with your search.

Sorry about the bad news but positive side is that you have been saved a lot of $$ by getting the inspection done

Stay cool and be patient - goods ones pop up occassionally in Tassie so you never know when the right one will find you.

    Here it is again.

Buying cars from SA can be an issue as we don't have compulsory inspections yearly or even on change of ownership. Rego can lapse for years and as long as rego and engine number match it's all sweet at motor rego.

For $500 this might be OK (was it just over $1,000 last time?)
parts such as Disk brakes front from a wrecker etc
Transport costs can sure be a PIA

panel 67, this is the Kombi we just got out of buying.... the guy offered us our money back, when i rang him up to explain our disappointment, as its more then just the front brakes... the mechanic who is a VW specialist was very happy for us to know we were getting our money back.... dangerous, death trap!

ahh at least you got your money back!
i too had someone look at it for me in s.a.
but without even going into the mechanical side the panel work seemed beyond me and my finances at this time..

Aside from the issue of getting her to Tassie, at least you would have known she was sound enough after getting her on the road, even if it did cost you $3000. But good luck with finding one on home ground. Hopefully it will work out easier.
