Ok, so here's the scoop….. The day started, for some, at 5:30 am at Freshwater beach for the Salute to the Sun photo shoot. Surfers were invited to bring their favourite 'board down & gather for a pic. as the sun rose ….. I was number 162 & I reckon there were at least 200 turn up - the biggest so far. The rest of the day was spent surfin', swimming, watching displays of timber 'board building, talks by visiting Hawaiins, food stalls, displays of 100 years of surfboards, etc, etc, (I think you get the picture ) Kombis started rolling in from about 7:00 am & we totalled 18 at last count. Folks came & went as their Saturday commitments allowed, so I may not have snapped everyone…..sorry if I missed you. Nice RHD converted Westy Very nice paintwork by a young, local panelbeater One of Geoff's babies out for the day... This had serious engine work going on…
Cut Fleetline panel full of young folks loving the kombi company New to me & very tidy John's tidy split on the right & a recently resto'd one on the left, ( yes it is unregistered…..) Kombi family bay & Murray's Ratmuller SC
Hey Markus….where were you ? Recognise these plates/bus….? Alex & his bus Rhonda kept us fed all day….thanks mate !! Mike's very tidy bay'n'board Club VW is always represtented
Greg's rat split always draws attention…..the plates say it all Shayne & his pride'n'joy were just diggn' the day. Nice to be around people like this The Tardis set-up for the day & going nowhere in a hurry !!
This is "Tricky" the bulldog…. Tricky has bad arthritis but swims at Freshy everyday. He walked the displays stoically but when he couldn't walk any further, he was ably assisted into his chariot by his owners. I hope my children are this kind to me when I get arthritic……brought a tear to my eye. Lovely people, great dog. Tricky's ride Lock'n'load Headn' for a well earned rest The afternoon rounded off with performances by local muso's…..an absolutely awesome accoustic steel string guitarist - a young Freshy "unknown" - Ziggy - that had people stopped people in their tracks to listen & a set by Northern Beaches local "more experienced" - (read grey) - surf band "Gravy & the Bones". This was followed by a series of three short films by local filmmakers & then the screening of Jack McCoy's tribute to surfing culture/history & surfboard development, " A Deeper Shade of Blue" Despite a few raindrops as the evening progressed, pretty much everyone stayed to the very end………and left absolutely stoked I didn't hear or see one incident of cranky people & when the crowds left, the only thing left on the grass was ice from eskys…a credit to the vibe that was created by the Freshy crew. If you didn't get there, put it in your diary for next year,,,,probably won't be as big, but Duke's Day is celebrated every year to recognise the introduction of surfing & aloha to Australia. Cheers, Mark
Awesome pics Mark ! Saw little bits of the day on the news last night ! So bummed to have missed it looked like a great turnout of Kombi's & people enjoying the day !!
Already put it in the diary ! Just have to plan my holidays a bit better for this year i think ! After all I am the boss
Ahhh, I forgot about the hotrods….. Thanks for those awesome shots Mike. In years past they have outnumbered the kombis……this year they only had three roll in…. Damn fine vehicles though ! Thanks for the pics. Kazz...
