    1974 Kombi.
    50 litre tank. 1.8 engine.
    375km between Forster and Appin,
    7.5km to a litre.
    13 litres to 100km.
Is this good or bad? It was through heavy traffic, and traffic jams on way back from Old Bar. ( Do all the kombis leave late on Sunday or early Monday? )

Typical consumption is 11+ litres/100km depending on configuration (weight, auto, state of tune etc...) I usually get around 13 l/100km around town in a T3 auto (no attempt at driving sedately). In my '71 1600 I've never bothered measuring it. I'd say your consumption would be ok given the traffic and taking into account inaccuracies in measuring, the age of the vehicle &c. It's a bit of dice roll without knowing detailed driving conditions, speed, engine tune and so on.

VW 1979 user manual for the 2l quotes 11.8 through to 13.5 depending on driving conditions and automatic. Having had both a '75 1.8 and a '78 2l I don't ever recall any significant differences.

No, we left just after 2pm on Sunday :)

We have avoided this by arriving Thursday and leaving Tuesday

We leave early Monday, which gets us around the back of Sydney by 11am, for then a traffic free cruise home (against the incoming traffic) for the next 4 hours.

1990 T3 SC 2.1L efi with 5 speed manual averaged 8 klms per litre on combined highway & surburban ..... thought it not that good but lived with it.

1973 Bay (aka Igor) 2 litre worked with twin 40mm Dellortos gave me just over 12klm per litre on highway and 10klm per litre in suburbia ..... happy with the consumption.

Never a real lot of stop start, sit in traffic though ;)

You're getting about 24 mpg in the old terms ..... there is a lot of air to push out of the way in a Kombi and camper extra weight.

Comparison with my 1641 Type 3 with dual 34 PDSIT standard carbies - Wheels test quoted 28 mpg overall (Cruising 32 mpg), I'm getting 25 mpg with shorter runs than the road test report back in 1972 and more stop start suburia/city traffic driving o_O

The words "Fuel Economy" & "Kombi" should not be used in the same sentence :)

"Fuel Useage" to move a vehicle with the "Aerodynamics of a House Brick" is more appropriate.....;)

I work in old terms so 22 mpg, I'm happy with that. As you say Bert they are pushing a lot of wind.

If you can contain yourself to 90 kph economy increases drastically.. And you get to see the scenery.

Went from Geelong to Springvale after Revolks with 5 (2 oldies and 3 teenagers) on board and all our gear, then with even more stacked in, to the boat and then home to Hobart, a total of 375 km, and used 39 litres. 2 litre twin carb in tin top bus. Just a shade over 10 litres per 100 km. 90-100 kph for a large proportion of it and no toll roads in Melbourne. She is a bit more thirsty around town but not usually more than 12 litres per 100 km. The 1800 camper I used to have wasn't that different. If you bring the speed up it does make a big difference, but you shouldn't be driving them that hard if you want them to last.
