I took my syncro ( which has a 2wd gearbox) to Wolfburgs motors at petersham because the gearbox whines in every gear except first .
His diagnosis confirmed the gearbox needs work and to take it to Dunhams down near wollongong !
My question is has anybody had there gearboxes repaired rebuilt, and who did you use ?
how much did it cost well approximatly ?
Is it better just to get a old second hand gearbox instead ?
I"ve also got the syncro gearbox sitting in the garage so should i try and have that repaired ???
a few questions there sorry but would appreciate your advice /opinions
    thanks
    Craig

Subarugears do an adaptor to bolt a subi box to VW engine worth looking into as they have them to suit syncro. A mates syncro has had 5 boxes since I fitted the EJ20 turbo 13 years ago. He bought 2 syncro's for their boxes had 2 rebuilt the last 1 had new shafts Albins 3rd & 4th gear it lasted about 4weeks & 2nd played up. It's been sitting in the shed for 3years now. Damn shame after the freebie hours I put into the swap. I have been trying to convince him to fit a subi box.

What does Subarugears do with the front diff?

You use the standard diff but they only make gearing to suit the American syncro ratio. So you have to change your front diff to suit.

Syncro27 has just had his syncro box rebuilt by a guy in QLD Bribi Island I think so see how his goes, he had it done in the past bu a guy up near Kempsey but it didnt last. The problem cant be the boxes but the manner in which they are repaired as they lasted quite a while when new. Half a rebuild is a lottery but total rebuild if done correctly should last. However if mated to an engine other than stock that could also be a problem.

thanks for all your help !
the synchro gearbox became rattly and noisey after a mechanic (vw) for rego had a new tyre put on the drivers front !
As soon as i drove out the noise was apparent so i took it back the next day, They had also replaced a balljoint so they thought it was suspension noise. I took it back again a week later and they found the new tyre was 25mm larger than the 3 others so they had the tyre replaced They said it should settle down.I was going up to Nelson bay that weekend and they said it should be fine so thats as far as it got , and we limped into nelsons bay with loud grating noise and unable to exceed 30klms/hr. The mechanic up there said gearbox is stuffed and could only source a 2wd one ! So i still have the synchro one at home in the garage !
I like the idea of rebuilding the sync box !

The mechanic should have known better. All 4 tyres must be exactly the same on a syncro.

Send it up to Rudi on Bribie as he can source parts.

    Yes Rudi is doing mine.

I should have had him do this years ago but the distance was an issue.

I have a great gearbox crate which Ego charged me $80 from the central coast depot and shipped up to Caboolture depot in QLD (Rudi's closest depot) which took 4 days - great service.

He is going to ship it back to me next week so you can have the timber box if you want - the gearbox sits in it perfect and is well protected.

Rudi has all the tools and can get all the parts you need.

He has repaired or replaced or changed the way sections were put together to do it properly (where others have stuffed it) and adding special plates to strengthen weaker areas.

He even had to source the low gear housing for mine as my stuffed bearing killed it. Note these parts are not VW but Steyr Daimler Puch made in Austria and hence not as easy to source.

Rudi wont do a half-ass job and gets it right first time and I know a couple of customers who have had their gearboxes repaired by him and they are still going strong today.

Is Rudi a "Syncro Only" box specialist, or does he do 2wd stock 5 speed T3 boxes as well?

Here is the box/ crate - it is just a melamine timber box fixed together with chip-board screws - but it is strong and well designed:

    Syncro gearbox:
    Hey

Gearbox in crate (note the side timbers to keep it stable)

I think it's now a requirement for transport companies.

Last time I was getting quotes for a gearbox to be freighted, was told they can no longer be simply strapped to a pallet, as they've had some leak, making a mess on the floor of the truck...;)
