Hard to get into 1st

    soinds silly for me to say this but when cold and the gap is bigger is that letting fuel in? Could that be the case of the fuel smell?

    I goes into airbox as tintop said.
    Unless you still have the carbon filter which is unlikely.
    The adapter's split so you may need to make one with different sizes of fuel line as sleeves.
    There should be a steel pipe running from tee piece .
    If missing you can replace or use rubber hose zip tied out of way.
    Pipe is tidier.

    Cool it must be to the top but I have that had a cap on it. Will see if I can get the pieces and make it work. Cheers team

    fuel won't go through the carbies unless it's being sucked in from the engine turning --- you are currently venting your fuel tank into the engine compartment - that will give a fuel smell
