I have found a good used one Europe, but the consensus on discussions here is that the insulation used would be asbestos?

The new ones I've found don't have any insulation? But am I correct in presuming they work ok? or better to have that than none at all. (Presuming they'll fit a ute)

    Regards
    Gordon

Thanks for the replies, I saw the VW Heritage one and this one:
    http://have-a-nice-bay.nl/product_info.php?products_id=8916

Sent an email enquiring about the insulation, heard back from Bus Ok.

Sometimes it's cheaper coming out of Europe, but don't know is they are the same originating manufacturer.

133 ish euro is nearly $200.00 Aus.
Both will require postage....personally, I'd go with whatever Andrew -1500king- recommends.
    Cheers,
    Mark

    Thanks oldman,

Yea, happy to go Andrew's recommendation, especially as they have free freight for orders over $250, - (Hope I read that right).

I can bring 2 in if someone wants one - preference given to Sydney/Central Coast buses - pick-up/delivery Northern Sydney area, - sorry - just saves sending it on.

    Regards
    Gordon

I supply them posted Australia wide for $250. Alternatively, you can do a 'group buy', etc,etc...

Where does this get mounted and what is it protecting? I don't know if my 1800 has this.

    Hi mellow
It mounts above the muffler to stop heat transmitting into the engine bay.
There are a few conversations on the forum - search asbestos, heat shield.

    and some pictures mounted..

Andrew - you could have alerted all that you can supply these, instead of putting up the heritage link.
I did search locally but nothing came up.
I'll get one off you if no-one takes up my offer above.

    Regards
    Gordon

Thanks, I checked and I definitely don't have this so would be interested in your offer. I always thought it got very hot above the exhaust but didn't realise I was missing something.

Was this shield on all type 4 engines? Our 79 had one but one of the brackets rusted off. In the shed somewhere? Other mid 70 Bays I have played with did not have one??

I have spoken to someone else who has a 72, and he said it wasn't suitable for his bus.
Suitability also depends on the exhaust system used?

Unable to advise whether it is fine for different years and motors.

From what has been discussed here - my presumption was that buses came with them, and over the years they have either been removed/rusted/lost or deemed to be irrelevant?

There was a thread elsewhere on the forum discussing the overheating of a bus, and it was questioned if a heat shied was installed/ or the addition could improve the overheating.

My 77 2ltr, standard exhaust, looks similar to the pictures in the samba link above.

I am going to give it a go,

    Regards
    Gordon

    Hey Gordon

Keen to see how you get on with this one as I'll probably follow suite if it goes on aok and you think it's helping. Make sure you post a few installation pics.

Just put the engine back with heat shield. PIA with a tow bar! managed after a lot of fiddling/removing tin ware/ loosening the exhaust etc. But it's in!
