If you are checking the car out ,look near the right rear tail light as the hole that should be there I can't see, If you look at the LHS you can see the hole but I can't on the RHS unless they have the plastic plug in the hole. Which is a indication that there has been rust repairs been done at some point.
I reckon this is worth a look It’s a LHD as far as I can tell and unless someone has done a great copy job I reckon it’s a Westfalia It’s a lowlight so more desirable but will be a 1600 It is a late lowie- crossover. It “could” have a type 4 motor. 1700. - 2000. You would need to check https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/de...-5877613?pageSource=details&id=SSE-AD-5877613
This one is literally down the road from me. I am negotiating a look at it later this week. And as you have explained Barry this one is a 1800cc. The fresh paint concerns me though? 1973 VW Kombi$29,500 Van/Mini vanManual4 cyl 1973 VW Kombi poptop , 5 seater camper van. 1800 manual fully rebuilt body/ newly painted inside and out. If the emails are offensive Tell him to piss off. There's a dodgy restorer who I'm informed still operates from Burleigh and a popular way of disposing of bog jobs is as a supposedly " private sale". Not saying that is necessarily the case here but enter with eyes open. If he has the irrits now then he is going to be unbearable as you have necessary checks done. A kombi does need to have good karma
New paint and a lot if new bits is a big warning sign. Rust can blow out within months. Also check provenance to ensure it is not a Bali or Brazil import. Lots getting flipped currently. Avoid like the plague unless thoroughly inspected by a trustworthy vw mechanic. Any details that show shortcuts in paint, body, engine ,wiring , invite close critical inspection. Rebuilt engine can and often means the stuffed engine has had a couple of repaired s.h heads fitted or some other rough fix. All normal sales yard tricks apply.
Tasmania I know but maybe worth a look? https://forums.kombiclub.com/threads/1976-kombi-poptop.57597/
Plus a good comprehensive resto usualy starts at about $45k plus vehicle. So $29k has to be a quickie done to a tight s.h bits budget. Just my cynical but experienced two bobs worth
All what Barry & others say x 2. I like the look of this van but again it says 3 seats??? & it's a 1600. Check for conversion plate behind passengers seat. Otherwise the 'engineering' becomes an issue. Check out the yellow/orange one first. It'll give you a feel for what is. I like the 2 litre in campers. Cheers
Thanks again for all that have responded. Think I'll flick the one in Maleny considering its a 1600 not 1800 as advertised. Tassie is a bit far to look at this point but not totally out of the question. Might be another stupid question but -How do I check provenance to ensure it is not a Bali or Brazil import?
Behind drivers seat (particular reference to seating capacity) & if a camper have a look behind passengers seat. Cheers
The 76 poptop in Tassie that Barry mentioned above looks interesting Sounds kosher and well priced if as stated. Would expect its gone if as described and people are buying at mo. Tassie not far if its a good vehicle that suits your purposes. Few kc peeps in Hobart that may give it the initial check? Re Bali and Brazil busses. Plate I guess should indicate. My main method is the strange wrong details alert me to look closer. ( or just walk away ) Have a close sus of a few good busses. After that you will develop an eye for things not right. Always helpful to have a second set of semi educated eyes accompany you. You tend to notice different things. Helps with the debrief later.
Cheers Cbus. Yeah I communicated with old mate in Tassie and as expected she is sold. The search continues.............
