hey does anyone know any mechanics around Gladstone or any places nearby?
Ross from Volkswreck

He first started wrecking them for parts 20 years ago and is a great mechanic and great guy. Have seen many T2s and beetles in his shop so my guess is many here are keeping them to himself!
Worked on my bus a few times and I am happy!
Has anyone in tassie got some good recommendations on who to use in the Hobart area. Just brought my first Kombi and it needs a service and good all round checkup as I purchased it off an elderly couple who have not been able to use it for the last 3 or so years.
After a minor swipe in a shopping center carpark I had a decent dent in my right rear quarter panel just forward of the taillight. I had never had paintless dent removal done on a car before so I had a look online and picked these guys as I recognised the owners' names from my old school. Admittedly the dent was in a 'good' place (the offending vehicle managed to miss the taillight, bumper, and the vertical join line between the two panels on that side), even so, Darren did a fantastic job straightening the dent out. All the scrape marks buffed out and now you can't even tell that there was ever a dent there. I had a coffee nearby and was on my way in under two hours. I would recommend them to anyone in a similar situation, they are at Everton Hills and can be looked up here -
great service from VolksVair
ok picture this after serveral years doing my resto during the first stage of the RWC. the tester claims the motor is on the way out - we take it for a quick spin down the road and it became terminal. I put the word out on the forum as I'd been away from the kombi fraternity for many years and Amy put me onto Frank - a man I'd never met before. I explained our position - that we were going away in a group of 40 people and had suffered the flack from many family and friends that the kombi hadn't joined us on our camping expeditions yet so the pressure was on. Frank loved the work and the passion that had been put into the kombi so far and saw how desperate we were - he came to our aid during the break between Xmas and NYE spending time away from his family to help ours out. Over the last few months we've had multiple issues with a bus that had been stagnant in a shed for over 15 years and an unknown history prior to that - Frank has come to our aid at each point, not hesitating to take our phone calls and work our solutions including visits back to our home which is about 30 minutes away. I don't offer recommendations very lightly - I used to work at a national level for an insurance company managing their repairer panel and I guess what I"m trying to convey is that I'm hard to please. And Frank has ticked all the boxes from providing invoices for all the parts he purchases, going the extra mile and genuinely caring about the kombi (and us) being on the road. Most people in business these days it goes without saying are in it for the coin - this is definitely not the case with Frank and on some occassions it's even been hard to get him to take money for the services he's provided. The kombi world is a small one and I'm sure some of you have already come across him but for those who haven't - I couldn't recommend him more highly.
I've heard he knows a thing or two

Kombi owner too
Thanks so much for this.
I was just about to ask if anyone knew of a good mechanic who charges a reasonable labour charge and does good work.
I have just ha d a very unsatisfactory 'affair' with a south melbourne establishment at $125 an hour! and the job I wanted done incomplete...
All in all really poor service and follow up.
And they looked so good. I thought $90 an hour was steep at the Jeep place.
I should have asked.
Really appreciate your list.
I think I might try Veeland at Wonthaggi but would love to know if anyone knew of somewhere or someone good near Elwood in VIC.
If Leigh, from Tyre Power in Hobart is still around he did an awesome job getting mine back on the road after we broke down on holidays. Always a good sign when theres other Kombi's in the garage
Does anyone have a recommendations in the Victor Harbor area, we have recently moved and I'm seeing a lot of beetles about so thinking theres got to be a VW mechanic near by.
Not that I know of.... My Mum is in Aldinga Beach still. I grew up there. There used to be a guy in Willunga but he retired about 10 years ago now....
The closest one that I know of and could recommend is V&T on O'Sullivans Beach Road at Lonsdale.
the guys at veeland are fantastic and very helpfull. unfortunately M ark is going though some health issues and is not working....we all wish him well and hopefully he will be looking after our kombis again soon
Thanks Abby, quite happy with V&T when we lived up that way was just hoping for someone a little closer.
Reggie has just been convalescing at Jarrah's Automotives in Taree. Jarrah's an experienced Volkswagen mechanic and did a great job replacing the cracked piston, piston head and damaged barrel. Found the parts, put it all back together again and double checked to make sure there wasn't anything left in the carbies or motor to do more damage later.
You can find Jarrah's workshop at Caesia Place Taree, used to be Les Barlin's at 106 Commerce St
I live at McLaren Vale and take my buses and ghia to David at Willunga Auto Electrical & Mechanica. He grew up working on air cooled volkswagens at Dave Boyd Motors and became the head mechanic there. He quite likes seeing the air cooled stuff coz there isn't that much of it around still.
