We're outta here.That afternoon we ditch the Sandman idea and buy a kombi from a hippy on the wharf.Two hundred bucks each. We put in two more weeks at the meatworks and collect our pay.We fill the ancient VW with tinned food and all our camping junk and rack off without telling a soul.Monday morning everyone thinks we're off to work as usual,but in ten minutes we're out past the town limits going like hell.Well going the way a 1967 kombi will gur getaway vehicle is a garden shed on wheels. Does any one know the author or the book ? $400 sounds like a cheap registered splitty.

Hi, I was given the Tim Winton book "Breath"for Xmas. It's set in the 1970's. I'm currently enjoying reading it (about half way through). One of the main characters is this super cool, somewhat older, into living simply, charismatic, guru-type, fantastic surfer who knows of these secret surf spots, was once a famous surfer featured in surfing magazines, riding huge waves in exotic locations, but now believes in the more spiritual side of surfing, etc, etc....get the picture ...he's cool personified. Of course, ... he drives a Kombi! Cheers, David.
'I suppose my story begins in 1979 when my parents did something radical for a happily married couple living in suburban Melbourne. They sold their cars, rented out their house and set off in a VW beetle to see the world. I was born on this trip, and the spirit of adventure lives on in me today. In Darwin they ditched the beetle and headed to Bali. In Europe they bought another VW, this time a kombi van, and travelled through the rest of Europe'. Who is the narrator ? What is the book? A clue. I started the 1996 school year with my mind clear on one thing: I was going to sail around the world. How and When were yet to be worked out. My trip was virtually the only thing I could think of. No wonder my school marks were less than spectacular. :umm:
