We have been having an awesome trip in Gertie, left Sydney on the 22nd, first night lani's at old bar then our friends at Burringbar (near Murwillumbah) for Christmas, that's about 900kms and Gertie didn't miss a beat mechanically. Have been tripping and camping since then from Currumbin to Byron, Lennox, Mullumbimby, Nimbin and surrounds and an electrical gremlin continues to show up from time to time flattening the battery. Alternator seems to be putting out about 13.6 to 13.8 V which is ok but not super strong but several symptoms seemed to point to the voltage regulator (Bosch RE57) so we waited an extra day in Murwillumbar and the local Repco got one in for me overnight and all seems ok so far but I'm sure the alternator is weak also.
Anyway currently at Lennox and another week on the road to go, will post some trip pics when I get back to my computer.
    Lovin Kombi camping again!!
    Cheers

    Hey Jethro,
There is some gear in/on/over that bus;). Nice road trip:D.

"electrical gremlin continues to show up from time to time flattening the battery."

One for those smarter/better memory than I.....where is the reverse current relay? Just a thought about the random battery flat stuff.

You been jump starting yourself with that electronic thingy:rolleyes:?

    Enjoy your cruise holiday:D.
    Cheers

I did jump start once with the little iPhone sized starter (got one for Christmas) and it worked well but second time it didn't seem to have enough grunt even though indicator lights told me it did..... clutch started that time just south of Byron with Wife, 17yo daughter and 15yo son pushing!! All enjoying the Kombi vibes!!!

If voltage that low then likely you are not getting much depth if charge in battery. Hence will flatten easily.
    Sounds like you have multimeter?
Check voltage an hr after stopping.
Might need a cheap battery charger to keep it topped up at caravan parks.

Good luck with rest of trip.

A faulty diode in the internal diode pack will give lowered output plus sometimes battery drain at rest. ??

Yes from some other reading it described a "leaky diode" in the alternator and the symptoms seem to match mine, is that what your referring to cbus?

    Yep.
Neil ( T4camper) may stick his head in. The expert in such things.
Been looking for a diode pack but haven't found on usual vw suppliers yet.
All alternators I have played with had stuffed insulation on wires from diode pack so most due for a refresh.
Would say that your Alt is up for a rebuild.
New diode pack, brushes, clean up slip rings, bearings. Cheap spray can finish ;)
From enquiries seems aftermarket alternators bit like other repo gear.
Have yours rebuilt by reputable sparkie .
VW heritage list a reco Bosch at mo.
Always a bit sus of how complete the job may be. ?

Unless others can advise a good alternative.
