I don't think i have posted up before my Kombi...a 1973 bay was 1800cc but morphed into various subaru configurations until i decided to go commodore 3.8 Like all of us I have so much else going on so it has taken a year til I trust i have a road going vehicle and its awesome! VT series 2 3.8 ecotec running standard 091 box with 265/70/16 rears...gives me approx 100k @2500 110k @2800 and 120k @3000...heheh...won't say any more. My goal is a machine i can go bush with exploring...possibly even as far as the kimberley but meantime northern NSW ...plenty more plans for it!
Hi tillis, 265's on the rear. Must hang to the road well with that commodore engines weight. Any mods up front to handle the changed weight balance.........or is it just rear steer & throttle......bit like an original kombi. Must kill the hills. Cheers
How do you get on with rego and insurance with such a dramatic power change from standard? I have a recollection from somewhere that non original motors could only have an increase of HP of a certain percentage over stock- something like 25%? Plus you say .........."120k @3000...heheh" If I was in it at 120k plus, I wouldn`t be saying he he eh - more like f############*k
I found a new use for my kombi...prospecting! metal detector! There are so many old goldfields within easy driving distance in northern NSW...easy distance not so easy roads
I am kind of interested to know what Subaru configurations you tried and why you went Holden. And have you been performing the conversions yourself? Looks like you have a very useable bus.
If you want a pseudo off road vehicle just disconnect your Kombi front sway bar. Helps keep wheels on ground by taking 'rigidity' out of chassis. Cheers
Hi Paul Yes I had an 1800 engine and decided i needed to keep up with traffic so converted to 2.2 subaru...very successful but was keen to experience turbo so swapped to a EJ20t...yep thing went bezerk and i used to do i lot of road miles visiting my son so it was fantastic(apart from one big speeding fine!) but my son moved back home and i bought a trailersailor and thought i needed some grunt to tow it...hence the holden V6...love it! Yes do most of the work myself
Gotta love the QLD rego system. No annual roadworthy inspections required. Just pay the dollars, and it’s deemed registered, (and supposedly roadworthy), no matter what anyone does to it!
Not quite It can be defected at any time. In theory. And modifications must be according to national regulations. Failure to being r.w can mean insurance would reject a claim. Qld is only 1 hr and 30 years behind.
When does the “defected at anytime” happen, if not compliant? With no annual mechanical inspection, surely it would only happen in the slim chance you have random stoppage by someone with authority.....
