Carol and I are booked to fly to NZ South island leaving Melbourne 25th Sep for 2 weeks. Gift to Carol for her septuagenarian achievement. We will be touring in a campervan.
Our recent OS experience is limited to trips to Tassie so need to ask a few questions.
    1. Believe that our driving licence is OK and that road rules are much the same as ours.
    2. Believe that no passport or visa is required?
    3. Will our phones work OK?
    4. Does master card do the trick?
    5. Should we get some NZ currency before we go?
    6. Is NZ 240V with same plug?
    7. What are the 'must see' places ?
    8. Anything else you can advise?

1 to 6 is correct. Probably get a better currency exchange rate if you shop around, even at Australia Post, rather than at airports.
    7. As much as you can in the time you are there.
    8. Try the seafood - sweet as Bro!
    ;)

Enjoy your adventure in the “Land of the Wrong White Crowd”

CORRECTION: You def don’t need a visa, but you may need a passport (now), to enter NZ.

That will be an awesome trip Al !
Sue and I spent two weeks in a van, in the South Island and one in the North, for our honeymoon.
We flew into Christchurch cruised down the centre, out to the east coast at Dunedin then across to the West at Milford Sound, zig zagged up the West coast until we hit Nelson.
Must see-s in my opinion...Christchurch itself & the gardens...Lake Tekapo Church of the Good Shepherd ( not religious by any means ....but the simple stone building on the shores of a glacial lake is a memory I carry forever....) Milford Sound - pack a spray jacket !, Queenstown....Shotover Jet..Arrowtown.....watch the roads...mountain,shale and very scary !Haast Pass...Franz Joseph glacier.......so much to see !
Just get on the road and you will find it all.....it’s all just awesome!
Fuel is expensive, but hey, it’s a holiday and you won’t get far without it !
Have a fabulous trip....I’m going to read our diary now ......;)
    Cheers,
    Mark

    Where's the Squid ;)

Get some NZ currency to cover incidentals ..... check if there is a limit on what you can/can't take ........ avoid currency exchange bureau/outlets as they'll rip you off

And the hot springs pool at Franz Joseph and there is a 3D cinema that shows the fly over of the Glacier- my wife tells me (I didn't go on that one).
Waihiki Island- ferry ride and food and wine tour- excellent.
We used our credit card when we went and will do the same again later this year.
Enjoy you will not have enough time to see what you want and will go back again.

Up north, head to kaikoura if you can ( roads closed for a bit due to earthquake, not trying to scare you ! ) it’s a beautiful place and one of the best for Kai Moana ( seafood ) Kaikoura translates as eat crayfish, my old town. Further north Nelsonis also beautiful and some great wineries. Christchurch as a city is nice although still rebuilding from the quakes. Down south Queenstown is nice but a bit overrated in my opinion. I love Wanaka, Arrow town. West coast I can take or leave but the Glaciers are cool.
Definitely take some currency, you will definitely need your passport. Roads etc you’ll be fine.
Oh and if you pass through a town called Oxford there are two splits in a shed I’ve neen trying to get my hands on for years

Definitely don't change money at airports.
Use card in NZ or you can walk into bank and swap Aussie cash.
Can get cash out on card at daily rates.

    Tekapo is my childhood backyard.
If you are into trout fishing the lakes have trout and salmon.
Need to check fishing season dates.
    License needed.
A self contained van can park a lot of places without being in campgrounds.
Check freedom camping site for info.
Nothing beats camping on grassy river banks under the willows and fresh trout for breakfast.

Prob head south via the Mackenzie country ( lake area)
    Mt cook national park?
Camp at rivers or lakeside around omarama and lake avimore/ benmore. Fishing area.
    Head to wanaka and Queenstown.
( both touristy but the area around produces excellent reds . particularly pino. )
    Arrowtown worth a visit.

Not overly fussed with further south.
Check out Milford sound if interested.

Over haast pass and up west coast.
    Gold mining and greenstone history.
Drive up to walking distance to glacier.
    Very quiet area.
    Head to nelson
Then Blenheim wine area and kaikoura.
Could do a few of the northern passes if interested.

From chch can head to akaroa for an overnight stay. (French village )

Could still be cold so pack some warm clothes.

Don’t forget to reset your watch back, when you arrive.

Around 10 years, should be about right.

Road rules are similar except the give way turning left to oncoming turning right like Victoria used to have.

Do some internet research on signage.

Driving is great there. Drivers are much better than Australians. I know with Westpac you can access your normal bank account through ATMs with no extra charges.

The days of saying that airport exchanges are a rip off are long gone.

    Dunedin = great
    Queenstown =great
Christchurch= was great. Unknown what it is like post earthquake. (Please let us know after your trip) I liked the place so much that I nearly bought a house there until the ground started shaking.

Trip to Milford Sound is a long drive. We flew in for the day from Queenstown. We also took a ski plane up to the Tasman Glacier from Mt Cook.

Check the weather report if doing Arthur's Pass as we nearly were snowed in. (In October)

White water rafting in Queenstown (Shotover River) is brilliant. Jet boat is OK and Bungy is not as exciting as I thought.

Great input. Thanks. We will take on board. Ongoing challenge.
Setback with my passport. Photo rejected because it had almost invisible lines in the background. New pics and resubmitted. Fingers crossed!

Stop fading away like me Alpal & may your trip be wonderful:D.

So a few wrinkles (invisible lines) moved to the background:p:D. Look younger after that photo?

    Cheers

We broke up the trip from Queenstown to Milford Sound with a couple of days in Te Anau. You can take a cruise to some glow worm caves while you are there. We took the bus to Milford Sound (they stop at all the best places) from Te Anau. Had an overnight cruise at Milford Sound.

Picked up passports today. Ticked off all the must do's before we go so ready to rock and roll next week! Packing is next. Keep it simple so it fits in the hire camper.
