Hi there, I’m needing some wisdom on a 72 lowlight dormobile I’m interested in buying.

It’s a real beauty but I’m unsure what is a fair price and what’s excessive for a van that’s had most of the work done.

    @Samkay

    G’day.
Need a definition of a restored van.

Shiny spray job or fully documented and photographed bare metal respray with full rebuilt mechanicals.

The latter can cost someone $50k plus the price of the base van.

Hi Barry, not a bare metal respray but apparently the van had some rust removed (and new panels welded in) and it was primed before a nice looking respray.

Fully restored is probably not the most appropriate description. Not sure what you’d call a van that’s had a good quality spruce up and overhaul?

To fully restore Kombi can cost you 40 to 50 K plus mark. That is every nut and bolt being replace or refurbished to make it like new.
If it has only had some rust and outside respray around the 25K mark and that will depend on the condition of interior and mechanical condition. Having photos can give people a better idea .As Barry has mentioned how has the work been documented with photos etc.

    Beware new paint.....

Don't put up links in case someone gets in under you but many of us here happy to assess ( as much as is feasible in usualy crap ad photos) and give an opinion but accurate info is necessary.
    PM to anyone who volunteers.
If it's on something like ' car sales' and you are happy to link then post it here.
I'm happy to suggest details and range of you want to PM me.
    Good luck.

Hi Wayne, thank you for your wisdom.
The interior is in great condition (and has a combo of original and newer internals) and engine is clean and runs well (it has had about 3k of work done on the engine, breaks etc).

Owner has receipts and progress pics of its transformation. Local Bris guys have worked on it.

This is the truth. There are a lot out there that have had poor resprays. If the rust isn’t fixed properly (and it’s rare to find a Kombi that has never rusted), it will come back through your nice shiny respray within a couple of years. You need to see photographic proof of all the repairs and if that’s not available I’d walk away unless you are expert in assessing a Kombi for rust or have an expert with you.

Thanks for that, I hadn’t noticed! If only I had spent that time working on the kombi! o_O;)
