Airstrip is a no go zone during the Old Bar Kombi fest w/e.
Why was he using it?
Yes - only to camp - no planes.
So why was he able to fly into the ferris wheel if the flight strip is closed? Why was he there? To run into the ferris wheel?
Read the Notam or download or use the app.
Not applicable for light aircraft pilots.
That was the last year the airstrip was used during the October long weekend....
I wonder why?
Di**head pilots that can't read a notam that may have said " Beware of obstacles on south east side of take off path".
Protecting fools from themselves & the public.
I was 5 yrs old when I worked out things were 'slippery when wet'.
This was my first Old Bar. Although I didnt stay at Lanis that time. The pilot is a bloody liar as he was not trying to land. I watched him start his engine and rev up then take off with the wind and was going to hit the top of a pine tree so he banked hard left and hit the Ferris Wheel. All the other light aircraft and ultralights were taking off into the wind. Totally stuffed the day and it was raining to boot.
Bit of the old PPPPP that light aircraft pilots get no training in for the way they get their licence. Same in hang glider community. Self regulated organisations that may not do PPPPP very well!!
The footage is scary. Those poor kids.
Just to set the record straight, and clear the bullshit out of this conversation:
The investigation was thorough and uncovered some serious issues within the aviation fraternity, aircraft manufacturers, government administration and oversight, AND the Old Bar organising committee.
Hopefully we have safer skies.
Believe that report and you will believe anything. I was with a sailing buddy and we both commented that he isnt going to clear the pine trees when he suddenly pulled left and hit the ferris wheel. I was there and know what i saw.
......and that is what the report says Phil.....on page one of the complete document
Whoops should have read the complete report
I saw it also ,he appeared to lose power before he hit the Ferris wheel
Now weve got to hope that with 2 lawsuits going on against local council an who ever else the lawyers can suck money out of that this event doesnt shut down forever due to the plane incedent.
@David H , what’s your thoughts on whether this was pilot error. Yes, perhaps the airport should have been closed to be on the safe side, but surely a pilot takes responsibility for how he flies his/her aircraft at some point, especially on a small airstrip like this.
It always comes back to operating safely & being able to do that & that comes back to having the skills taught thoroughly in your training which was the point in my earlier comment & what the department identified in their report as not happening. Totally pilot error & training organisation slackness. It's not as if he hadn't seen the ferris wheel on his previous circuits & could plead "I didn't know it was there".
Yes that’s pretty much what I was thinking but not having had the flight instructor experience you’ve had I was thinking perhaps I know enough to be dangerous.
Righto folks.......let's get back on topic !!
Old Bar 2019
Looking forward to it.
Picking up Bindi from Paul at East Coast Kombis tomorrow. Very excited. Paul has done a lovely job. A few finishing touches to do and I will be showing her of at Old Bar this year for sure!
