We've all heard a few stories about shoddy mechanics or restorers. How about some stories about the good ones? It seems many across Australia are seeking businesses worthy of being trusted with our beloved Kombis. Please consider listing your favourite businesses here with location and specific experiences (with a bit more info than "this bloke is good").

    Brisbane:
We have been using Custom VeeDub at Stafford since we bought Isabell earlier this year. We have dealt with Pete the mechanic there and found him to be enthusiastic, prompt and thorough, he explains things or shows us in a way that doesn't leave us feeling like idiots. While we have only been using this business for servicing and engine repair to date, we believe they do resto work too.

    Bribie Island:
Pete sent our motor to Conti Engines on Bribie Island for full reconditioning of the 1976 2 litre engine. This cost just over $4000 about a month ago. It came back purring and to date we have been extremely happy with the work done. Previously the motor blew enough smoke to rival a World War II smokescreen; she is now a non-smoker and will live to be 100.

    Any others?

I'd like to recommend both Australian VW Performance and JV Automotive (specialists in VW), both in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

JV I use as my everyday mechanic, and John the owner is a great guy. He explains what the problem is and then fixes it, and he is straight forwards and gives reliable quotes. The last time I had engine troubles, (which magically went away after an hour :p), he was happy to have a look at my bus without any notice, gave it a once over and didn't charge a thing. He just said, have any more troubles, give me a call and we'll see what we can do about it. He even offered to take my bus home to his house so he could leave it outside and see if it was a cold-starting problem in case his factory where he locks up the cars didn't supply the same conditions.

Australian VW Performance I've had less to do with, but still nice people. I've bought some bits and pieces from there and had a little bit of work done. I'm pertty sure they do restoration work, or at least the mechanics and paint work.

Bob at Volks Care, Tania Avenue, Windsor Gardens is the best I've ever dealt with.

Not the cheapest 'cos he won't use bad parts,
Not the easiest to deal with 'cos he's a grumpy old git.
Impossible to compromise 'cos he won't do short cuts. (but he will find "alternative" solutions!)
Not available for "special deals" or "mates' rates" 'cos he does every job to the same level of expertise (ie VERY high).

Advice, free (be prepared for well meant humour).
Parts, at cost ( If he knows you are a serious VWer)
    Help, endless ( see above)
Expertise, ( I think he designed the bloody things!)

After my 30+ years of dealing with these strange beasts, Bob is easily the best I've ever met and certainly the best to deal with.
An absolute expert who is so generous in terms of advice and parts (he charged me $12.00 for a clutch cable for my '62 Beetle and when he saw my astonished face he said, "well, that's what they cost in 1962!!" [NOS at original price!] )

If you want it done properly in Adelaide go to Bob.
    It's worth it.

I've already said it in another thread, but I'm very happy with Wolfgang at Volkscourt in Thomastown, Melbourne. Once he knows you're a genuine VW nut he looks after you. I've had my engine rebuilt by him and couldn't be happier.

Have found Custom VeeDub very helpful on the odd 2 occassions I have used them - even gave me some shims for the flywheel replacement in case they were needed. Haven't heard a bad report about them.

Also German Autos @ Geebung - maybe not the cheapest for a service but close by and they do a great job - actually think their service price is very competitive and clean premises :)

I have to recommend Mick Budge & his apprentice Paul - Mick's Mechanical Verrierdale (near Peregian Beach, Sunshine Coast Qld.) 0411833413. Mick's been looking after our VWs for 20 years, he's super reliable, efficient, explains everything and really knows his VWs (did his apprenticeship on them). Cheers.

    Adding to this old thread...
All Classic Car Restorations in Brookvale, NSW did a magnificent job of restoring/respraying my van. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a top class resto. Not cheap but worth doing things properly hey?
Very meticulous yet managed to work to original schedule. Friendly and encouraged me to go and look at the work as often as I could.
Up-front and honest about any extra work required beyond initial quote.
A truelly shining example of what the best in this industry can offer.

    A vote for Delux.

For resto work Sasha at Delux. I have never seen a person so pasionate about getting the right job done.

Parts (the hard to find) touch base with Rick at VolksRecyclle. Man, his workshop has everything in it. Knows his stuff too.
