    vehicle id

    ..Hi,
my Virginal posting! :D 8) -Aloha (  ) from Blighty!
..just bought an ex-Aussie Crewcab, chassis no.267070274- can you age date it & shed any light on its history?
    - what i have is that it was shipped to the UK in 1994, having been bought ( cheap  ) from a Sidney scrap yard. There is a sticker on the inside of the passenger windscreen ( still! ) that states that the vehicle is unfit for road use ( Western Australian Police?) . The last owner told me he believed it had been used as a pest control vehicle; while cleaning out the cab today, i found a thermometer in a stainless steel tube , with a pen clasp, marked Melbourne.

ANYWAY! -can you help at all?Thanks.. :D 8)

I make it a Dec 66 which means its a 67 year model as they usually changed models on the 1st of August the previous year.

The defect sticker means that it couldnt be used here without getting inspected, It was deamed unfit for use for some reason, could have just been bald tyres ect.

Not really unlesss you get a birth certificate from VW germany.
I dont think yours was two tone as it is a standard 11 window kombi and not a microbus.

Hi, I know there is a stamp of year on passenger door, wheel, speedo, but are any of these really accurate eg. shelf life.

    Yes, thats where it is.
Or have a real close look on that plate it should be the bottom row of numbers
As said , if you cant read the plate it is stamped below the plate, you shouldnt have to remove the plate as it is usually just below it.
Have a good clean with a wire brush.

This should be it........Andy removed the plate and it is the same number as the top number on the plate 740196

    The plate reads
    VOLKSWAGENWERK AG
    MADE IN WESTERN GERMANY
    typ 23....................Fargest Nr. 740196
    Zul. Gesamlgew. kg 1865 Baujahr
Zul. Achalastvorn kg 950 hinten kg 1015

A few letters may be wrong

    Thanks Lorraine

    Thats it.
    March 1961.

That means its a unique Aussie one as it has two round tail lights , one above the other, one is the indicator which is orang and the other is red and is the brake and driving lights.

Yeah........thanks Dave and yes it does have two sets of round tail lights, the bottom ones were missing and Andy just found them in the engine bay while searching for the chassis no. Both in great condition. Are there many of this model kicking around? I thought that extra holes had been drilled in aftermarket.......whoo hoo...I love original!
Can I ask how you knew about the tail lights?
My gut feel told me it was a 61 as it has the bullet blinkers at the front and the round rear tail lights ........Lorraine
