Is there any way a bay steering box can be adapted to split?
    I just had to ask

No, different mounting and your steering wheel won't fit.

Is there anyone in Sydney that rebuilds or reconditions split steering boxes?
Mines terrible and wanders all over the road.

There are so many elements to affect steering/wander in your front end.
I'd be working through from centre-pin towards the wheels, then look at the steering box......
    cheers,

Get an appropriate puller and take the pitman arm off to get the seal measurements. Make sure you can get a new seal before you remove the old one.

Have you tried Vintage Vee Dub Supplies in Campsie or Volksbahn Auto in Pendle Hill or possibly Andrew Dodd @ North Rocks  Mick Motors in Northgate Qld (he sometimes has things others don't )

There is also Heritage Parts @ VW Heritage - google search for their website ;)

90 weight gearbox oil or higher.
If your worried about seals leaking then you can also use semi fluid grease by Penrite made for steering boxes.
    All that will work.
There's been talk about oil corroding bronze and brass, not so, would take a couple of generations to happen.

Thanks, may use the semi fluid grease just to make sure.
