Well the voltage was a bit all over the place still. Sometimes low - mid 12’s and sometimes low 13’s. Redid the lugs on the voltage regulator and now sitting pretty constant at mid - high 13’s. Possibility it is brushes in alternator, but seems good for now. Looking at taking motor out one day in the future and I have a spare alternator that I can get rebuilt.
The original VW reg was 3 lug Df/D+ and D-. DF to the rotor, D+ reference voltage from the alternator. D- reference ground at the alternator. The brown wire in your pic is the D- wire for the reg.
Sounds like you had terminal issues. Also, have a look at the starter motor post where the alternator charge wire connects and also the 6mm red/ white wire which runs to the fuse box. may be more gremlins there. All power to the front of the car comes from that 6mm wire at the starter + post.
I think Andrew is talking about the large post on the starter motor. There is a battery cable and a 6mm cable on the post.
