    Hi all,
I know this has been touched on before but I need some advice, my insurance policy from CGU will not be renewed at the end of this period. I have been having problems with them for the last few years with them persistently wanting to insure my 89 syncro as a caravan which I have had to argue about each year, my broker has now told me CGU refuse to accept my vehicle any longer.
so who do you recommend I approach? the vehicle is in very good condition, engine 14,500klm, recent respray, no rust, Trakka conversion, in summary its a credit to how its been looked after, in short a very honest syncro and I am open to any required inspection to prove this fact. So to all you syncro enthusiasts how much should I be insuring for and with who???
    Thanks in advance.
    Kev

If you use a broker you shouldn’t approach any one - isn’t that what they are meant to do?

Its my broker telling me CGU will not renew, also my broker has no understanding of these vehicles either, mention syncro, kombis etc to them and I may as well be talking an alien language, its getting to be very frustrating dealing with them, that's why I posted.

Is the problem the Syncro or the Tracka conversion?

The problem is (I believe) CGU and my broker have persistently called the syncro/Trakka a caravan over the years and I have had to argue this is not correct over the years-each year in fact, I am now over it with these people and I posted for advice on who to insure with???

Give Shannons a try. You may get lucky on the first call and strike someone who knows VWs. I have a contact in Shannons - his name is Steve and he is in Perth. See how you get on :)

CIL, a division of Shannon's (Suncorp)
They insure camper vans and caravans and know the difference
My understanding is that most won't insure your vehicle if it has a cooker and gas cylinders (as opposed to gas converted engines) and is used to camp in
If you ring Shannon's they'll put you through.
Shannon's will insure you if you don't emphasize the camping part.
The advantage with Shannon's is you own the wreck (salvage rights) that CIL don't do.

Thanks, this is the information I wanted, will get on to Shannon's first thing in the morning.........what I don't understand is the Trakka conversion is/was a registered camper all its life, why the camping problem??? fortunately the cooking side of it is a removable gas stove and bottle so no gas certificate to worry about!
    Anyway again a big thanks.

Many reasons;) (parked in bush camping apparently your gas bottle/stove caught the bush alight & caused their loss:confused:... it confuses me:confused:) apparently from their side but 'under emphasise' the camper bit (I know ...you love it!) & I reckon you'll find Shannons okay.
Tell them it's a picnic hamper on wheels:p.

A bit more information would be helpful @RodG. Why were they "no help"? What happened?
    Cheers

Hi David - I spent a good 10 minutes on the phone with them while they filled in the form and the Sales person said he would be back in a few minutes with a price. When he came back - he said he they would not insure it for the amount (20) i wanted because of the area i live and it was parked either in my back dead end laneway or on the street. I have immobilizer, and tracker. I have now gone with RACV and I am currently organizing car parking in a factory up the street.
    Thanks for your concern ..appreciated.

That makes a big difference for those of us that don’t have garages

Or 1 car port and 5 household vehicles :(

    Hi there,
    This is easy fixed.
Join the CMCA, cost $62 membership.
You then have access to the club insurance.
After valuation I have my 1990 syncro insured as a campervan for a value of $30K for under $700 premium.
    Valuation cost $132.00
    Worth it.
The policy comes with a bunch of extras.
