Well, you know how it goes...once you are into Kombis you eventually fix your mind on something you REEEAAALLYYY want.

After a very rocky start where my wife nearly killed me for buying a kombi (whole other story) she, over the years, really warmed to the concept and grew to love Kombis.
Once the love of Kombis was entrenched she fell in love with Westfalia Camper fit outs. Just so exact in their specs and use of space, plus the louvre windows, club lounge, full width bed, quirky pop top and other bits and pieces.

We have finally found and bought one. A 1973 German import (of course) Westfalia in original condition including the unadulterated and complete interior fit out. Sadly, there is some work and dollars ahead of us externally - it needs the bottom of the nose cut and shut, rust repairs around the bottom few inches in various parts, new pop top canvas etc and then paint!

BUT...this one is the keeper. A decade long search for the perfect Kombi (for us) may be over abd the dreaded process of restoration may be upon us!!! Dust off the wallet!!!

Here is a pic. Not too glam yet but in great original condition. Allegedly runs well but let's just wait and see...we are stoked!!!

Now the tough issue will be ahead of us in terms of "Big Ted". Having spent thousands to create a great kombi...do we try and keep him...or will I have to sell to fund the resto?? That is the million dollar question. I have tried running the "lets just invest in precious metal" and keep both. There is some hope on the horizon that it could be possible!!! :)

    "BIG TED"

    Anway...thought I'd share!

If you do have to sell Big Ted for resto cash, hopefully it will be at the end so you are not out of the Kombi driving for long.
    Congrats on the bus.

Indeed! That will be the challenge as with us all - CASH FLOW!!!
Much will depend on how much work needs to be done and whether I want to do it over time as money is available...or...GO HARD in a massive concerted effort...
    Oh the questions... :umm:

I reckon go hard. Otherwise it will bug you not having it. And although it would be a shame to sell big ted. I am sure it will all be worth it once the westy is on the road.

I'm with the others... keep them both. His and hers deal! Plus, you never know, you might be able to negotiate discounts with suppliers for bulk purchases...

I picked her up today (From Ceva Logistics "Moving Cars"). GREAT!
Previous owner tells me she is a she but does not have a name!
There is a fair bit of panel work as suspected but I have gone into this eyes wide open.
Engine seems smooth but lack power in top gear...maybe just needs a good service and clean out (wishful thinking) - doesnt blow even a hint of smoke. Clean as a whistle.
The westy interior and all else Westfalia is intact and 100% there...happy days.
Now the tough and expensive work will begin! Fingers crossed, I have positive feelings abut it all!!!

    Rich

    I'll post some pics soon.

When I got my Westy, the first thing I did was strip out the interior. An easy thing to do once you get started. Good cleaning before reassembly. All original.

Interested to see the interior as I'm curious to see which version this is.

    cheers
