Does anyone have any recommendations? Someone who doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

I went to a wedding on New Years day and took 580 photos and I was not the paid photographer.
The paid photographer went home at the start of the reception so all the photos from then on were from me. I normally wouldn't take so many but the bride is like a daughter to me.

So John is right get all your guests to take pictures plus I would also get a professional. It is one thing that you cannot replace so find the money and get someone that knows what they are doing.

My daughter had a friend photograph her wedding (in Canada) and has been sorry ever since.

Adrian and I were only married four years ago and the other thing we did was to put disposable cameras on every table and asked the guests to take random shots at there table. The quality of the photos was not fantastic but some of the shots were.

At the last minute we had it videoed as well which I am glad we did.

I go on a photography forum which is called www.photoforum.com.au there is a lot on there about wedding photographers so maybe check that site out as well.

Hi Ash....as Mish mentioned, the disposable camera on each table is a great idea, you never know just what you're going to have developed though:eek:
Apart from a photographer that knows what they're doing i recommend a photo booth, you can hire them and it'll be a major hit with your guests.

    Just my 2c worth...
What is right for you really depends on what kind of photos you want. If you want professional looking photos then you'll need a professional. If this is the way you'll go then I have some advice contrary to some of the above. In our experience we had an awesome photographer but his efforts were thwarted by damn relo's trying to get their free happy snap. Try getting that nice natural lit shot while there's a 100 flashes going off every second!!! Maybe your families are more controlled than ours! I'd go one way or the other, the camera on every table thing can work very well if that's what you want. If you want the professional, give em a chance and ban all other cameras.
Lastly, it's a great day and the photos always look good so good luck and have fun!

I agree with what you are saying Steve but the photographer had gone home when the cameras were used at the table. She did a mock cake cutting then left so any photos taken after that were a bonus.
After the ceremony we went out on the Golf Course away from everyone and took all the professional shots, so other cameras were never a problem.
In my family I am the camera nut so we didn't really have a problem:D

My advice is you pay for what you get.

Toni and I wanted really good pics so paid a lot more for what others would have for a small album. Our reasoning was that long past the day the pics remain rather than the meal or other things that make up the wedding and reception etc .....

We looked at photographers who were doing something different to others at the time (1998) and found one with a style of photography we both liked. BTW we ended going with Letchford ...... and were really pleased with what we got in the album.

Depends on what is your priority.

Best of luck with it as it is a personal thing.

    Cheers
    Brett

As said, come the end of the day you only have 2 things left from a wedding...the Brides dress & the photos...so pay well for both ....
(& get your friends to bring their camera's....& tell the photographer to take the pics YOU want, not what they want to take)

    Hi Ash,
My 2 cents as a wedding photographer based in Melbourne. (Apologies for the waffle in advance)

Weddings are events, some are big lavish affairs, some are small intimate functions with a few close friends and family (and some even elope). Either way they take some organising and each aspect is planned meticlously to suit the style you as the important couple want it to be. Wedding photography is part of the planning process that should be carefully considered for a whole host of reasons as mentioned above.
Ultimately you may end up considering that it is not an important part of the day and you rely on friends and family to provide you with the digital memories of the day (And you will most likely get some really good shots across a range of people). Or you may decide that you want to be able to put together an album of professional framed /creatively angled / suitably lightmetered images of a big enough resolution to do a range of things with.
Either way give it some thought. If you decide to go with a pro photographer, then look for ones whose portfolio/style suits what you are after and then negotiate a package that suits your budget.

Good luck and may your day turn out just the way you want it to.

    Cheers
    Rob

Animal and I are getting married in October and we have found the perfect photographer who is local to us, we have known of him and his ingrediable art for years now and we had always said thats who we would have as our photograoher. This is a a couple of paragraphs written by him giving all of his clients advice for why and who you should chose as your photographer......

THE GREATEST WEDDING ADVICE... WHY UTILISE GREAT IMAGE MAKERS…?
What value do we place on priceless memories and feelings shared with our loved ones?
When we take the time to think about our own family photos, it is a historical part of each person’s life. From the box brownie to the latest digital camera, photography is a great medium to have for reflecting the quality of a very important time in life. Many would say you could not put a price on those timeless images! The emotional value of one of the best days of your life, being your wedding day, deserves to be photographed by experienced people, whose Profession is Professional Photographic Artistry?
For some brides & grooms it is not until after the wedding is over, that they realise the value and importance of their special wedding images that they now have for life...
What happens, if you do it well & how to out source the best experience?
What happens, if you don’t do it well & compromise on your investment?
“The way we take the time to share and reflect over timeless photographs with the people we love, determines the simple happiness within our own hearts & minds.”
Why choose a Professional Photographic Studio?
Contracting your wedding album is a visual showcase for your family’s heritage, which when all is said and done, becomes a keepsake forever. “Excellence & Style, takes time…”Christian Dior”..!
Entrusting someone inexperience to capture your big day is an enormous risk? Yes, it takes a minimum of up to 10 years of professional full time experience to Master the Art of Great Image making?
Of course the interpretation of your day will vary depending on who you decide and trust for your wedding experience? This is your only guarantee and trust to have the style of the wedding day captured, being only; One Moment…… One Time…” There are no second chances”..?
Consider your choices of photographers at the moment...
    (1) Pot-luck, with Uncle Bob, whose interest is Amateur/Digital…you-beaut cameras with a big lens and took some happy pictures on holidays to enter into the local camera club?
    (2) The risky “part-time would-be”, photographers pretending to offer semi-professional products, for discounted affordable standards. Who on weekends, photographs weddings as a second job and uses local mini-labs to give away amateur negatives or so called colour managed high res-files? Handing over all responsibility, any-care & production time in having to take the time to create a lifetime guaranteed image collection with a stunning album of your showcase wedding; Forever?
    (3) Contract & outsource the creative professional wedding, specialist image maker! In personally viewing the quality weddings they have professionally photographed, from beginning to end you will see their great experience & talent that they invested! Great Photographers dedicate their lives full time to this profession, in which they have invested a substantial amount in the best image making tools & equipment available. They have usually attained a high level of awards & status with Professional photography associations, such as the A.I.P.P. Australian Institute of Professional Photography. (View their awards, accolades & image collections from their discerning clientele, ask other wedding service suppliers of their strong reputation & association, as your professional guarantee). © Copyright Dynamic Images Photography 2008 - 2 –

Professional photographers are published and commissioned for their photographic style and expertise. (By viewing these published images you can see their full range and level of creative talent at the decisive moment, by the discerning paying client). How does the studio make you feel?
The professional photographic artist utilises sometimes several professional cameras with professional equipment support and back-up systems (full design & production facilities), that only a reputable professional photographer/studio offers. A professional studio will usually offer a Lifetime Guarantee on YOUR contemporary wedding albums, photographic collections & custom framed enlargements.
At the end of the day, yes they all take pictures, but to many varying degrees...
If your priority for your wedding photography story is to be exceptional, you need to research your wedding photography experience in a very discerning manner, rather than having disappointment and any regrets after the wedding day! Remember, a professional highly sought after, creative photographer has dedicated their life to achieve award winning creative photography, just as a medical surgeon or an award winning chef dedicates a lifetime to their craft. You only have ONE chance to invest in a wedding album of excellence. Why compromise by having only the cheapest photographer for a lifetime of regrets in paying the ultimate price?
As we all know, “You do get what you pay for, in any investment in life”.
A Great Photographer is an Artist...
Just as a brush and canvas is an important tool to an artist, so too is a camera and the wedding album to a creative photographer. Great artists and photographers understand light, composition and many factors that play an important role in achieving the difference between ordinary or extraordinary imagery. Great photographers make the bride and groom look and feel their very best in sharing their special day like no other person!
A great photographer will use professional photography equipment with ease and grace. They understand the technicalities required to achieve outstanding results. Capturing images professionally to hand colour manage and guarantee with their exclusive studio, from the beginning to the end of the image collection. Seeing the quality together is most important at the interview stage. As the discerning imaging studio, has usually had a very special relationship with their professional lab and custom album craftsmen for over 10 years to allow the design experience, to be effortless. Custom Printing Super large files, on professional archival photographic papers and designing, individual modern/acid free wedding albums are your lifetime guarantee. (No regrets or compromise on your special wedding story, forever!) Images should be alive with expression, where the emphasis is on beauty joy & fun through wedding-scapes!
Great photographers’ images are stamped with their own individual style; the mood of each photograph is carefully “painted”. So therefore you need to be aware that finished products vary a great deal, from each and every professional creative photographer. (Take the time to research and invest in commissioning, a contract with your wedding Image Artist/Studio!). © Copyright Dynamic Images Photography 2008 - 3 –

Having good people skills is an important quality that a wedding specialist photographer should possess. They will help the average person, who hates having their photos taken, feel relaxed and enjoy the experience. Some bridal parties have a lot of fun when having their pictures taken and that’s the way it should be. Besides capturing timeless sequences of images on your day, your photographer is commissioned by you in an agreed time/coverage and location schedule; this will simply allow you all, to enjoy your wedding experience together the way it can be, fantastic!
Make sure that you take the time to view the particular photographer/s recent weddings and the complete wedding coverage, especially their style and presentation (not just a few over worked images, here & there). Will they be personally taking the responsibility to photograph your wedding day? In meeting with your photographer in person they will usually spend a considerable amount of time before the wedding, so you can all develop a good rapport. This enables everyone to develop a comprehensive understanding of what you all expect & how you’re wedding can reflect a magic dynamic world through your feeling of true love and romance in your wedding story forever.
