    HOOOO RAAAAAHHHH!! Well done girls.

I'm SO proud of you both, and your lovely husbands. Well done to you all. She just looks the duck's nuts.

Bet you guys are looking forward to a few restful weekends with nothing Kombi-related included in them.

So now we need a name for Kombi of Hope. We thought we might get into legal wrangles if we call her Cadbury . . . the kids quite like Tinky Winky after the gay purple Tellytubbie . . . and of course, we could just call her Hope. Any suggestions?

Good to see the KOH is almost finished :)

I was wondering if there is a kombi club sticker displayed somewhere on the KOH as I couldn't see one in all the pics:umm:

Well, it’s been a while since we’ve been on KC. Once the Relay For Life event was over in November last year, we all heaved a big sigh of relief that 9 months of planning ended with a great event and a final fundraising total of $138,000 (as of last week). It was time for a break. Xmas holidays were great - no Kombi stuff, no P&C stuff, no Scout stuff. So now it’s February. Kids are back at school and Relay planning for 2010 has begun. KOH’s first public outing will be at Surfest on 16th and 17th March (if all goes according to plan).

Next outing will be Laps For Hope at the Ocean Baths at Nobbys on April 18th, a new event we’re organising with the surf lifesavers involving teams swimming laps of the pool, celebrity swims, swimwear parades etc.

After that, and we’re really excited about this one, will be Barks For Life on May 30th at Speers Point Park, a brand new event in support of Relay For Life involving some beloved companions, OUR DOGS!! And we know there are lots of dog lovers amongst KC members. Our canine friends provide care, support and unconditional love through sickness and in health and Barks For Life will celebrate the relationship between cancer survivors and their doggy carers. It’s going to be huge :) If you fancy more info just email us at kombiofhope@gmail.com and we’ll send you some.

Thank you for all the lovely recent encouragement that has bumped our resto thread back into the KC consciousness, especially to newer members who have taken the time to read through our journey.

Just for you Lorraine, here is a picture of the back tail gate, complete with Bus Stop and KC logos which have always been there.

We couldn’t have got this far with the resto without the support of Roy and his team at The Bus Stop. They’ve provided great parts, quick and efficient service and a very much appreciated discount for our charity bus. The generosity of KC members also helped to finance the resto and we thank you all for the part you have played in helping to find a cure. In NSW this year, 35,000 people will be diagnosed with cancer and 13,000 of them will lose their lives to it – scary statistics but if feels good to be making a small difference. After all, 22,000 people will survive their cancer diagnosis :)

So what is happening with KOH resto since this is a resto thread! Unfortunately, we’ve had bad news about the engine. Perry tells us that we need to take it apart and check the heads since we have low compression. Depending on what he finds, we might just be able to do a partial rebuild or might have to go the full hog. Financially, that will be a big blow but we are committed to getting her on the road for Surfest so we will just pay the bucks and get it done. We are all anxious to get to the end of our resto journey and get her out on the road. Off to Perry’s on Monday for two weeks so keep all fingers and toes crossed for us.

The interior needs finishing off (door cards, pop top canvas, headlining) and the drivers door leaks like crazy in the rain leaving big puddles on the floor. We presume we haven’t fitted the seal correctly. Any advice on attaching door cards very welcome coz the little clip things from Roy just keep snapping off. Mirrors to be fitted, locks to be changed to one key, new ignition barrell, back bumper to be welded on coz screws have sheared off into fitting. Perry still fiddling with bloody heater cables - does the heating system have to work for registration?

Apart from all that, the radio works a treat and passersby regularly comment on how fantastic she looks and what an awesome colour purple is for a kombi. Our website is in drastic need of an update – apologies but it will get done soon when we have all settled back into school routine. So if you are reading this Rev, I’ll be in touch soon for a bit of website training ;)

Cheers, Verity and Ian, Megan and Nathan

    Disappointing News

Quick update to say that KOH is not at Surfest this weekend. She is STILL at Perry's the mechanics. The engine has new heads and is more or less okay to go bar some part that will wear quickly and means we'll have to redo timing more often (sorry to the purists for my lack of expert knowledge of engine terminology and workings!)

Latest set back is that we need a new steering box (see Wanted section). Perry is off on holidays on 28th March and has promised us we will get her back before then ready for rego.

I know everyone keeps telling us it's not about the destination, it's about the journey but after nearly two (or is it three?) years we'd really like to be at our destination :(

    Hi Verity

Almost there, once KOH is on the road you make that Road Trip to Lithgow, I've got the home brew already :)

I'll put up some words to the big man upstairs about the steering box - I'm sure one will turn up.

    Rev.

PS - I'll be up in the hunter on Monday

These steering boxes are very hard to get (for low-lights anyway). I looked a while back after my then mechanic put on nasty extremely tight ball joints and made my steering ridiculous. Since they were changed to normal ones the steering is reasonable and the old girl does kind of steer wher you want her to go.

Roy was looking at importing the new Creative Engineering rack and pinion kit from the UK but I am not sure if he has done so yet.

Otherwise try getting yours re-conditioned. However, who would re-condition a low-light steering box ???? I dont know.

Try steering & suspension specialists locally they may be able to do it.

You can get new steering boxes for late bays from the US but not for early bays as yet - they are different animals.

    Good luck.

Perry has left on holidays for ten days so decided to get KOH back home and finish off all the fiddly interior bits such as the door cards, side mirrors, new locks, new ignition barrelll. We're going to have a go at the pop top canvas ourselves . . . might be a disaster!

The steering box we found was as bad as the original one apparently as we were warned :( Perry found another one but he ran out of time to fit it and says he wants to take it apart before he does to check he isn't wasting his time.

The engine is running well at last :) Bumper has been welded back on, straight as well!

So we have booked ourselves a site at VW Nats as our latest deadline (big sigh) and David says we're very welcome as long as we wear our purple wigs  We absolutely refuse to turn up in the bloody Toyota for the third year running.
