The domain name had expired. When the domain name expires the DNS (domain name servers) won't find it so any attempt to access it draws a blank. Godaddy actually hold the domain for another year at least beyond that expiry date which it is where it is "parked" as Mark mentions above. They obviously give some leeway. If you have a Unix based system (Mac or Linux) you can find out what is going on pretty quickly. Probably some tools on Windows.

I'd pay the $185 to the broker and I'm hopeful Roy would pass it on of nix

Is it possible @wirrah to 'mirror' the site in the cloud?

Domain names only cost a few dollars a year. If Godaddy (who are the holder in this case) sold it it would be at the commercial rate. The "broker" looks for buyers on the basis of "wow isn't this a great domain name to have" and rips off marks it up.

Of course I wouldn't really know as I only manage 3 non-profit sites, one commercial site and my own sites. Your kilometerage may vary.

Domain fees can also be paid for up to 5 years…….. so it may be a long time before it needs addressing again.

After trying numerous times and breathing into a paper bag, I have only just been able to join the KC forum again... I am so pleased to see all those familiar names and comments! Thanks to all involved to reunite us all and another thanks for all behind the scenes work.
Love this place and have grown pretty fond of most of you weirdos here. :D

    As @rstucke says above.

"Cloud" is just a marketing term for "you are running your stuff on somebody else's computer". The kombi club forum is on a Godaddy host (although I think it used to be on Dreamscape but all these places keep on changing ownership). It will be beyond the scope of this sort of arrangement to mirror it elsewhere.

Example. The Cocker Spaniel Society of NSW is hosted on a Vodien shared server. If I wanted to mirror it elsewhere I would need to move it to a dedicated server and pay significant costs.

So is it possible to 'SAVE' the entire contents of this site somewhere separate than the domain name holder/server @wirrah ?
    Cheers

Technically yes. In fact there is already a service out there known as the "Wayback Machine" (as in Peabody and his boy Sherman) that probably has a full record.

    eg. http://web.archive.org/web/20210227032125/https://forums.kombiclub.com/

    But no interaction of course.

It was the only thing that saved the old Lowlight forum.

    Yes it's automatic.

Alternatively there is no technical reason that the forum and its data cannot be statically archived (as opposed to mirrored) elsewhere in a similar fashion. A read only instance if you like.
