Love tinkering on the bench like that!! Probably one for the T2 tech clinic but since your talking gauges, my speedo at around 40 bounces up and down a fair bit and ticks a bit, do you think it may need a new cable?

Yep. Mine started doing that & I thought to throw some light lube down it would help. Also 'jiggling' the cable also helped but to no avail 6 months later. It gave up the ghost:(. Mechanic put it in & cost (from memory) $35 for cable & the same to put it in. I thought it one of the cheaper kombi bits;). May also indicate total mileage done:oops: to wear one out. I don't expect the replacement to go the same distance:rolleyes:.
    Cheers

It may not be the cable, but where it connects near the passengers' wheel has actually rounded out.

Grease cap on LHS where speedo cable goes through - http://www.justkampers.com.au/211-4...eel-for-speedo-cable-on-t2-bay-1971-1979.html ....even possible that the circlip is missing and thus speedo cable moving about - http://www.justkampers.com.au/n0124342-speedo-cable-circlip-for-beetle-t2-and-t25.html ...... cheap parts and even a new speedo cable would be worth doing at the same time and if the speedo cable hub seal is missing then grab one also - http://www.justkampers.com.au/111-9...967-vw-t2-bay-1967-1979-vw-t25-1979-1992.html.

Easy way to get the cable out and new back in is to tie some fishing line or string around the wheel end and the slowly draw it back up through to the dash ..... you then just draw it back through the hub but may need to check it has smooth a line as possible from dash to the hub.
(Have also found that some previous owners don't route the speedo cable properly. )

    There was indeed. :)

Another Kombi has found it’s owner, and now resides in the ACT. ;)

Well, not today but last Sunday morning.....
    Replaced the indicator assembly.
Now everything is as it should be.......nice n tight & self correcting.
Used the JK replacement part - top quality & very hard to tell the difference from the original...metal where metal should be & not plastic.
    Cheers,
    Mark

Sort of like the Type3 sports steering wheel - thought it was the the indicator assembly that was the issue but on removing the steering wheel saw there was no cancellation ring .... a cheap part and the boss had the screw placements identical so easy fit and saves having to have human intervention to canel the indicators unless sufficient turn not made on the wheel ;)

Picked up Little Red this morning from getting her brakes checked over - she was making a rubbing humming noise from the front and the hand brake needed adjusting - all good again.

I'm having the Kombi converted from a 'Speed Triple' as my motorcycling mates call it at the moment, yep running poorly on 3 cylinders, crook head, so Graham from Mid Coast Volkswerks is putting new heads and engine mounts as we speak (write).
It should be a much nicer drive, a 4 cylinder Kombi for Christmas!!

Loaded it up with supplies & 'boards....
There's a new swell coming & I'm heading up the coast early tomorrow with our two sons.
It's the first time they've both been home at the same time for years, so a father/sons surf trip is in order.
Staying at Lanis..... but could also be a dawn run to my favourite point break if it's lighting up ;)
    Cheers,
