Put new headlights on the 74 - just got to wait until dark so they can be aligned. Also put new hinge covers on him.

    Hi Kombi Club,
Went for a run with the COOL aircooled locals that Mr Beckstar alerted us to:D. A nice group up & meeting with others, afflicted with the air cooled bug, on the north side of Hexham bridge & about 14 air coold's travelling up to Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens & a lunch at the local organised by Michelle. Great Cruise:).
Nice meeting so many. Yeah...here's the photo;) IMG_0414.jpg2.jpg

Today, I pulled over to the side of the road to get a better view of the massive quantities of smoke billowing in the vicinity of the patch of road I had just driven over.

Didn't know I still had pace, especially whilst carrying a fire extinguisher.

Then I came to marvel at how ingenious those German engineers were. It was truly thoughtful of them to put the rocker covers directly above the exhaust, so that when a rocker cover gasket leaks, it drops straight onto the hot exhaust, and causes you to pull over in a dead set panic rather than waiting for the engine to run out of oil. Awesome genius, Herrs.

Then I delved into the stash of spares I so cleverly carry, and found the only rocker cover gasket there. How TF did I end up with a lone one when I bought an even number and use them in lots of two (google tells me this is also an even number)?

Then I went for a good long cruise.

I've been known to say " Just when you thought those German engineers were perfect they'll prove they weren't"!
Nice to see you can still run Tangles;). Exercise brought to you by VW!
& are a very prepared 'on the road somewhere' motorist:).
Had similar 'smoke chasing bus' after resto but was just dip stick bellows... whew!
When it's a 'flat' motor it's above everything else:rolleyes: other than carbs.
    Cheers

Only one side has the special smoke effect when it leaks..... ;)

And yes, the view in the mirror is similar to when the engine needs a full rebuild!

I still remember, the amazed looks from by standers, when I diagnosed the issue, with smoke still bellowing from the rear, and yet I had such a relieved happy look on my face..........

Without discharging the fire extinguisher in your hand? Cool under panic!
Which side? From the drivers seat facing forward. We are educating the un knowledgeable here!

If its an air cooled, which accounts for most, then its both sides.

    Forget what the purists say.

    Glue the buggers in.
Light touch of gud or silicone, ensuring none is internal that it can get into the oil.
I set mine on a spare head before fitting.
Comes off easily enough when replacing.

The gaskets are often not wide enough and if slightly " off" when fitted , get sucked in when backing off from high revs.
Or shrink with age n heat.

Had a look at the drivers side door lock today on flipper.Removed the latch and cleaned off the old sticky grease and re lubed so everything was moving freely again. I have never been able to get a key into the lock so removed the barrel and dismantled it. Found that someone had probably used the wrong key in it at some stage and found the tiny spring loaded flap that covers the key hole all bent up and filling the hole. After a fair bit of fiddling i managed to get it back into shape and working again. I then crimped the cover back on the barrel and cleaned up the wafers and put it all back into the handle. The return spring on the end that activates the lock was all out of shape so had to bend and tweak it to get it to do it's job again.
I also learnt that it was the same key pattern as the ignition which is a bonus because the passenger side must have an after market one fitted and uses a huge key that was different to the rest. Now with the drivers side one working perfectly again all the locks except the pass door are the same pattern. Hopefully i will be able to find another barrel for the pass side that i can modify to match the rest. WP_20190218_23_01_04_Pro (Small).jpg

Passenger side on the T3’s has exhaust pass under the rocker cover.

RH side, a leak just drops straight onto the road.
