About
My first car was a VW was a 58 Beetle 'Deluxe', my grandad (who owned a 68 Beetle Deluxe from new) & my uncle helped me to do a ground up faithful resto on it in time for my P plate licence. 12 months of rebuilding saw it only on the road for a month before a moron (that's the nicest word I can think of) made a illegal right hand turn in front of me causing a head on collision. Written off
It was another 15 years before I returned to a aircooled VW, buying a very cheap 72 Beetle as transport for work. The amount of strangers who would walk up & start reminiscing about their old VW's blew me away, considering the obvious rust, oil leaks & cobwebs!
Then my wife suggested buying a van for our young family, I somehowtook that as meaning a old Kombi would meet the requirements. I found mine for sale in Maroochydore Qld, flew up to inspect, bought that day, & drove back down to Sydney over 14 hours the next day. The first thing that struck me was how many waves I got from other Kombi drivers, it drew even more positive attention then the Beetle did.
Next rego the Beetle ran out, to sit aside until I do some 'minor' work to the kombi. That was 6 years ago, the Beetle now has a thick layer of mould over the whole body while I am still tinkering with the Kombi.Interact
