Dont know about air cooled T3's but a full proper rebuild on a 2.1 is minimum of $8k and would be the same for the water cooled T3 1.9 So $5k plus...
Find a new mechanic. The gearbox needs to come out not the engine. Good opportunity to check the clutch components while at it.
