Hi I have a 76 2L auto camper and have blown no 3 spark plug twice The thread seems to look ok - Does this generally mean my head is cracked Cost? Any advice would be great I’m in Newcastle if anyone could suggest a good vw mechanic Cheers Scott
Hello Scott, My mechanical knowledge is severely limited...that’s one of the reasons I can thoroughly recommend Perry Penfold in Georgetown. AJD
Depends. Could just be a shitty thread. If it is a time-sert will fix it and head won’t need to come off. May even be able to be done with engine in-situ. If it’s a cracked head that is a whole different ball game
Nymeyer's would be my pick over Perry 328 PACIFIC Highway, Belmont North New South Wales 2280 Phone: 02 4945 4811
i had new heads put on by Graham Melling in Coffs Harbour a few years ago, then had it tuned last year, the 'mechanic' had the apprentice replace the points, plugs etc. of course they over tightened one of the plugs and i could never get it to seat properly. it would then not run all that well, especially when it warmed up. I spoke with an older mechanic in Victoria who suggested I try this. i used a dremel in stead of a hacksaw blade. Did it work? Well it is now seated and running better, did it without dropping the motor, did remove the airbox. time to find a new mechanic. cheers Steve
Steve, love the Heineken on the bench .... so somewhere between 35 and 46 sec he opens it and I guess had a taste
Yep, I agree with him and you, a beer certainly helps solve a lot of kombi problems, I also like the accent, like watching Fargo, eh!
He probably cross threaded it and may have tried to correct it but couldn't get it to stsrt straight again so just screwed it in & left it at that. I have seen this a lot of times over the years, sometimes you can get the tap to start straight and clean it up but others it is either a helicoil or insert.
Any good engine shop (if there is any left) should be able to repair done plenty of inserts at my old job but not very close to help. SORRY Was taught to finger tight everything or a speed brace once started by hand then torque to finish. Air Gun and Cordless stuff are good for loosening only. Hope you get sorted.
