Head and gasgets

    Help ! I need the head machined on my 1976 bay 2L kombi . Was running on 3 cylinders instead of 4.
    Got engine out
    To be machined and new gasgets , and labour they quoted $2000.
    Is this expensive ???? Help

    Yes, that is really expensive - I had the same thing done for about $600.

    For that sort of price you could get a new set of heads installed and save yourself the bother of having your old heads machined. You may even be able to get the piston rings replaced and bearings on the crankshaft re-done as well.

    On new heads there isn't a gasket between the cylinder barrel and the heads - there is a lip that the barrels contact with. When that lip burns out, they machine away the lip and put in a metal ring that does the same job.

    You can get new heads online at Rod Penrose for $1200 but I've got them cheaper from the UK. $800 in labour to pull the old heads and install the new ones? Should be a days work.

    Price will vary with mechanics.....is the mech. that quoted you that, a VW fella? or someone who works on other marques...?
    Cartek in Adelaide has a good reputation, maybe get a second opinion ?
