I have succumbed to to technology and got a iphone.

Now with my old Nokia N95 I could pick any song I wanted and make it my ringtone but with this new fandangled thingo I cannot work out how to get my ringtones to work.

I have tried the whole itunes conversion through the "store" function but it wont work, keeps coming up 'error'.

I haven't tried Grarge Band yet but just about to give it a try.

    Can anyone please help?

the only way I know is:

with iTunes convert music to an .m4a file, drag it to your desktop (or find the file you converted). Rename it to what ever the name is but m4r (eg songname.m4r)

double click or drag it back into itunes.

it will then automatically add this to your "ringtones" in itunes.

next time you connect the iPhone just "sync" your ring tones.

Did the same thing myself John.
If I could take it back, I would.
I also get the error in itunes trying to choose a ring tone.

A work colleague has a phone that looks like the iPhone but not so restrictive, can't remember the brand.....

    Only 20 months left.....

I just found a way to do it through Garage Band, although it only allows 20 seconds of song :(

I'm mucking around, I meant that i totally missed that, right over my head :p

I would love an Iphone but it would be a waste for me cause I couldnt utilise its features.

Vespa, don't take offence, it wasnt intended, i am being sarcastic, another case of old fashioned communication being confused through technology.

Hopefully next week when I go to my free Iphone lesson at the apple store in Sydney I may be able to shed a bit of light onto this. I am a bit flummoxed by many things that seemed easy on other phones. I will try what has been suggested though.

none taken marcus. all good mate :D

iPhones have taken a lot of crap and I don't like that apple have locked out so many features and made some things harder than they should be but they do make a lot of other things really easy.

For me they are a good business tool as it syncs with my emails and messages and contacts and it makes it easy for me to attend to business while I'm really walking along the sand barefoot. I know other phones do this too but I have an iPhone now and it works good for me.

The worst thing about the iPhone is I can't beat my sons "doodle jump" score on his ipod touch.
