Hi fellow Kombi owners. I've just released a new free mobile app with the help of Kombi Club contributors!

Vintage VW SOS helps you to find the nearest mechanic with experience working on vintage aircooled Volkswagens, e.g. Beetles and Kombis. This app is handy for when you break down in an unfamiliar place, as it uses your phone’s GPS to find where you are, then gives you the contact details and location of experienced mechanics within a 100km radius.

The list of mechanics covers all states and territories of Australia, and is sourced from VW owners’ recommendations from the Kombi Club.

Get it now on Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vintagevwsos
Get it now on iPhone: https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/vintage-vw-sos/id1152886984?ls=1&mt=8

If you would like to suggest a new mechanic for inclusion in the app, please fill in this form so that I have the information in a ready-to-go format: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeTvCqDHMqv9bh-F123N1-quZylTtK_TsyS4T5Q3yg9DWjkeA/viewform

    FUTURE PLANS
Now that a basic version is released and it seems to be useful, I am thinking about how to improve the app to make it even better for you. Currently I'm thinking about:
    1. Add ability to rate each mechanic based on your experience with them.
1.a. Add ability to leave a comment on each mechanic.

Let me know in the thread below if you have any other great ideas!

    Sean.

Just downloaded the App, only took a couple of minutes. Looks like something I can use and will be useful for the future. Great job by everyone involved.

Hi, it's certainly possible. I'll need to do some research to see what's involved in releasing an app on the windows app store.

I think I know who you mean. Came up at the bottom of my list 86km from the city....

I think your house should be listed on there too Col. Not in the dodgy section though.

Sean - great idea mate. Will help interstate breakdowns a great deal I am sure.

    Hi Sean,
just downloaded the app, looks great and your suggested additions would add to its functionality.
I like the idea of vetting the less effective mechanics, maybe a traffic light rating?

Great idea Sean. I've got a suggestion for you
Why not allow Kombi owners to register on the app. Not their address. When you break down you hit a HELP button and an emergency beacon is sent out to all members within a certain range. They can then message you to see what the problem is and if they can help. Even if they're not mechanically capable perhaps they can bring you a cuppa.
    Just a thought.

Once again us T3, T4, T5 drivers are not considered. We also drive old VW's and although more reliable than some air cooled we do brake down from time to time.

That one and plenty more Brad.
Seems a plethora of such establishments.

My place probably should be on the list given the time it takes me to get anything done.

Down to about half the garden ornaments tho.

The only problem I do see with rating the businesses is that it would be an app developer passing on 2nd / 3rd hand information onto the public about established businesses. It is different here with the kombi services map. We are members of the public sharing our own opinions and experiences.
A legal way around it might be to flag companies who are highly recommended, but not red lighting those that are not?

Just getting any maintenance done with T3s is a problem.
