looking through a classic car mag recently they had a snippet on a Kombi that sold at Lloyd’s in Melbourne for the obscene price of something like $705,000.

The bit I find rather baffling was that this is not even an original Kombi but a 1975 15 window split screen converted to a 23 window. 1500 with a “beetle” gearbox.

From what I can tell it’s a Brazilian bus.....?
Or am I just missing some finer point?

    Gob smacking !
But its the old story - Its not what its worth - Its what someone is prepared to pay!
Its like real estate in Melbourne - Melbourne values are now fetching more than London equivalent prices !

I’ll have another look at the article I saw in the magazine I got the impression it sold for the $700k +

Either way it’s seems absurd that someone would put such “value” on just a “replica”

That price on eBay looks a bit more reasonable than the 700k at the auction

I'd say there's been a typo with that price ..... if it had sold for $700+k it would have been heard about in every VW nook and cranny on the globe

Checked the ebay listing .... pricing about what Edward Lees Imports is asking for his splits brought in from Japan - he lists a lot of the VW's on gumtree

Hopefully typo theory is correct .
Also hopefully not a Edward lees offspring.

Agree with Bernie that it certainly brings into question the reliability of said magazine.

What mag. was that article in Bernie?
    (I know the owner too......)
He's never tried to sell it, or promote it, for anything other than what it is.....a grafted samba roof on a 15 window bus.
( A LOT more honest than many out there.........)
    Cheers,
    Mark

Sorry I should have quoted my source ;)

    Unique cars
    issue 403
    July 13, 2017

    Pg 24

Interestingly the magazine indicated it was mossgreens that sold it but it shows up up in Lloyd’s list.

I know the owner of this bus too and have seen the work that has gone into it. Granted it is a 15 window Brazilian bus but the roof has been pressed as per factory - not cut in and never claimed it was a genuine 23.. It has creative rack and pinion and IRS rear. all rust has been cut and replaced, new interior all electrics work properly and its quite good value for what it is.

I have no doubt it is a well made bus and that there is no intention to take anyone for a ride. the thing that caught my eye was the snippet in the magazine claiming it sold for $705,000 which in anybody’s language an excessive price for any Kombi!

But that appears to be an error in the magazine. I guess it’s the age old story when it comes to reporting - Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

It appears I have jumped to an improper conclusion based on the incorrect information presented in the magazine.

If my comments have caused any ill will I am most sorry.

It was a fair call based on the info given Bernie so wouldn't sweat.
I would call same and still advise extreeme caution with newly painted, auctioned brazilians without a good full description and proof of resto but as reliable info comes to hand the initial impression is modified accordingly.

Its how I develop an assessment anyway and shows again the value of having knowledgeable eyes and ears everywhere via the forum ;)

Bugger, I just committed 4 x $10k deposits on any split I could find, to flip my investment into the $2.8m return, based solely on this thread.

Now where am I going store those buses? o_O

    :p
