Well, the beetle is ready. It receives its plates this Friday. It is the oldest vehicle taking part in the rally. Michael is still going to fit a Judson super charger to the vehicle in the next few weeks and then take it for a run to make sure all is well for the rally. We are on the road at present and plan to see him off in the rally from Darlington Point on the 18th.

The rusty looking '59 is registered and appears ready for next weekend. Hope it all goes well for Michael.

Well Michael is out there and doing it it the beetle. So far they have gone from Darlington Point to Wilcannia via Menindee and Wilcannia to Tiboburra via White Cliffs. Today is the third day and I don't know where he will end today. Below are a couple pics of the beetle at the start.

    Good luck.
Bum looks a bit low for outback roads but will prove their ability if it makes it.
"If" ??? Na. Of course I have faith in both of them . :)

Should be able to drive outside the ruts created by others OR it'll just shave the tops off the centre ridge :p

It was low like that when he arrived in Darlington Point. It was a bit higher when he left as transferred some of the spares to a support vehicle. Three days in with an overnight stop at Hungerford and all is still OK.

He made it from Hungerford to Tilpa via Bourke yesterday. Today is the last day and they are already at West Wyalong heading for the finish in Wagga. So far the beetle has held out OK with only a couple of minor challenges. The first day he managed to hit and split a rear brake line with a rock which was fixed in a town way out there. He also nearly lost the roof rack and managed to overheat the engine. He must have just driven too hard. Looks as if he will make the finish in the oldest vehicle in the rally.

Well he did finish and make it back to Melbourne. I am not sure how much further he would have travelled. We measured the compression ratios and they were down to 70 to 80 on all cylinders. This is the trip in the '59 beetle.

Overheat .... possibly caused by prolonged period @ high revs in not the most appropriate gear

That was exactly my comment. He did have fun. In West Wyalong they visited the local schools as the charity is located in that town. Guess which vehicle attracted the most attention from the local kids.? He is planning to do the rally again next year. Same vehicle just a little more prep between now and then. He is also converting to 12V, something I advised him to do before the event. He found travelling at night on an old 6V system is not the most enjoyable especially way out there.
