I have been thinking my wheel bearing is going bad, which it probably is., but I checked the wheel for play up on a Jack and and there is play but the hub behind the nut to moves slightly. I would have thought that the nut would play along with the hub when moved.
It seems as though the nut is lose. I don't have that size of wrench but that doesn't seem correct.

The only thing I am thinking now is that the hub casing has become out of spec a and the bearing is loose in there. ...

Take it to a tyre shop, get them to take the split pin out and tighten the nut with a rattle gun, then put new split pin in

Rear wheel hub/castellated nut should be tightened to around 200ft lbs. ....would have to check to be definite, however, definately should not be loose !!

Yeah I'll do that and report back... I would imagine that a loose nut would play havoc on a bearing though. Am I right ?

Take it to a VW mechanic. Do it up with a tension wrench properly.

Turns out it is the bearing. Nut is Ok. What would you expect to pay to have it all done?

Then after doing it up with a tension wrench the hole doesn't line up for the split pin, what would you do ?
